First one from craigslist but turned out to be the father of a customer, second one (current) from a customer just before I sold my shop, so I had a very good idea of what I was buying, and he made me a very good deal.

Craigslist. It was posted for about 30 minutes when I called on it and by the time I could get out to look at it he had had two other callers. I guess the price was right for them too. :)

Found my '97 in Truck Trader and the LX on CL. The LX owner was shocked that I called literally minutes after she placed the ad. Asked if it had the magic switch and she said yes. Told her I had cash in hand and wanted it. She said I'd have to wait 'til her husband got home from work. When I got there she told me that she got an insane amout of phone calls about the rig but had to tell 'em it was pretty much sold.:D

Good old E-Bay,while living in NW Colorado, I found mine in Rochester NY flew up there and drove it all the way home :steer: BTW it only had 26000 original miles. One owner drove it only on the w/ends.Never in the rain or snow.

It really does not matter where you get your 80, just get one! I got mine at wholesale auction ( I work there). Brakes were metal to metal so it went in the "virtual tow sale", and honestly it brought much more interest on line than if would have been a runner. Anyways, My bidder took my prize at $2150, 3xlocked and 206k, now PM current, mods, lifted and tires and 30k and 4 years later; my fuel bill out overshadows my purchase and upgrade cost by $4k. love this beast though

Ding! Ding! Ding!

I believe we have a winner for best deal so far.:D

I gotta admit, I followed an old green Range Rover across town yesterday. It looked like the guy 'wheeled it and likely worked on it himself. Actually was still running when I last saw it.;)
I kinda liked it. :grinpimp::eek::ban:

Still, I doubt you'd see many trades the other way. Not unless I was fortunate enough to have several 80s at my disposal for trading material. I could see trading a 5th or 6th string 80 for a Rover, maybe...

Traded my rover for my 80, guy was selling it on Craigslist.

Local paper classified after weeks of looking at Craigslist with no luck. Fewer people look in the paper, and people who post in the paper probably don't know about CL, which all worked to my benefit.
By the way, you will only ever see someone on hear crowing about a low price they paid, nobody ever brags about a fair price. Don't assume you can find a 3x locked 97 with 75k miles for "$50 and a ham sandwich" if you just look hard enough, you will drive yourself crazy with that thought.

That being said, I got a '93, rust free, <100k mi for just under $5k. At the time I thought it was a good deal, then I saw the steals some members were getting and thought I over paid, then I got real and am back to thinking it was a good deal.

My neighbor had it for sale down the block a bit. 96, unlocked, 150k, lots of records, but needed tires soon and no front axle service history. Turned out it had been done recently by the look of things once i had it open. I paid 7500, then added a supercharger, new leather, EMS exhaust, intercooler and some minor PM. Well mostly minor...i did replace a leaky rear main. Not the deal others have gotten but it was really clean and has shown no surprises (yet).

CarMax

They outsource their bodywork to my shop and my guy that works there knew I had been on the hunt for a clean Cruiser.

He called me up one day and said he had a vehicle to pick up for the usual quick repaint and detail :meh:

First thing I did when I saw her was check for the magic dial and when I saw it, I told him I was buying it :)

Thing is, CarMax has to go through each vehicle they sell, so I took her back to my shop, checked everything out, then put a couple hundred miles on her before actually getting her prepped for a repaint.

Everything was perfect as is, but my guy said to leave it with him for a bit and he'll make sure I get the full service ;)

He had over $5k worth of mechanical and PM work done (new shocks, brakes, tires, A/C compressor, condensor, all fluids, wheel refurbished, etc, etc.0 and in the end, I only paid $7500 for a minty locked '97 TLC with only 81,xxx miles :grinpimp:

To top it off, they gave me a 30 day warranty lol

The only drawback is that I had to wait an entire month for him to get all of it done and swept under the table

Was driving down interstate 580 in Dublin ca when I saw a black 80 sitting in the used car lot. Pulled off and went to check her out. It was traded in for a new 100 series an hour before. This was back in 2004, 130k miles, magic button and great overall condition. When I asked how much they had not determined a price yet. It had not been listed on the market yet. They agreed to do a full service, new tires on her , and full detail for 13k. Took the offer on the spot. Sometimes it is good to be at the right spot at the right time.
