When is a beasty 31M battery worth it?

That will be one that I will also consider if/when the replacement DH Platinum craps out. Thanks for the tip. How about the size diff? Will it fit with the Slee battery bracket?

Just tested my DieHard Plat 31 with a Solar brand load tester. 12.01v, and only 650 CCA. It's rated at 1150 CCA.

I've had lots of slow starts lately. This explains it.

Great...

Just took both of my plat 31 in today, both bad after about a year. At my local sears the platinum is discontinued so I replaced my main battery with the diehard advanced gold automotive agm and replaced the auxiliary with the advanced gold marine.
We'll see how this combo works. From the research I have done it looks like the factory alternator just doesn't put out enough amps or volts to properly charge 2 of the the dhp.
Hopefully with the automotive battery for the main and marine for auxiliary it will help this issue.

Bit of an update from the ORLC camp:

Back in 2013 I'd gone with DieHard Platinum Marine batteries, a group 34 for starting and a Group 31 for hotel loads. The 31 has been replaced three times now and the 34 finally died this week. I had noticed it starting to fail back in late October when at stoplights the low voltage would kick in on the dual battery isolator. It sits for weeks at a time in the winter and as of yesterday was at 8.6V. Last use was in early December to get a Christmas tree. It comes up to 14.4+ during charging and 13.6+ right after shutoff but going completely flat in 2 weeks is a definite sign of a battery that is beyond service.

So after much hand wringing and consternation, I had decided that there probably wasn't a positive ROI in staying with the high-dollar battery group (i.e. Odyssey). Doing so would also require a specific Odyssey approved charger. The Duracell mentioned above was appealing, but none were to be had locally. Even though still under warranty I didn't really want another DHP. I was prepared to spend some $$$ but figured I'd take the dead 34 down to Sears to see what they could do.

Glad I did as I was more than surprised at the results. The DHP (marine or otherwise) is no longer carried by sears. According to the guy at the counter the EnerSys product had huge problems, at least with the Sears badge. On previous warranty returns they required the battery to go through a 45 minute load test to validate it's status. This time they waived that saying they had pallets of DHPs going back and that he'd just take my word rather than make me wait.

What I ended up with was the DieHard Advanced Gold AGM. While this 34 has less capacity on the sticker, the guy said he hadn't had a single one come back. The new formula is a rebadged Deka Intimidator. And because this is a much less expensive battery than what I originally bought, I also got $100 in my pocket to cover the delta! Hopefully this one lasts. That's what I call standing behind your product! 2-1/2 years of use and they not only replace it without question but give me cash too.

My 31 is showing 11.5V on the monitor this morning, so it will be replaced shortly as well.

Thanks for the update. Sadly, I've been so burned by those lousy DHP31 batteries (in both my truck and my solar electric systems) that I'm not using Sears anymore for batteries. Sears has honored the warranties because they have to, but the repetitive hassles are not worth it.

The batt in the pic above should be identical to the Duracell... Both are Deka Intimidators rebadged. Should be good stuff.

Assuming they're happy with lower current charging I may revisit the Noco Genius 2 channel for on board shore power.

I've been intrigued by the DC-to-DC CTEK. 250S paired with their Smartpass. It only charges at 14.4v but is a 5-stage charger, up to 80 amps when used together. It has a battery temp sensor for optimization.

If anybody is using it, please chime in.

Works well. A nice feature is that when used with the Smartpass you can power accessories e.g. fridge off a specific terminal on the SmartPass so those consumers don't affect the charging phases of the aux battery.

Is there a drop in replacement for the DHP 31M and the Slee tray?

I'm wondering the same thing as my DHP 31 is on it's way out. Does anyone know if that Deka Intimidator /Duracell group 31 has the same post locations as the DHP group 31?

. . . and fits in the @sleeoffroad tray. That would be nice to know.

See post #66 above. He has the Duracell / Deka in the Slee Tray. All batteries in a group should be very similar in size. Post location, may slightly differ.

OregonLC, which Sears did go to in the PDX area? My DHP 31 has twice failed to start my truck in the last month. We are gearing up for a trip to Tahoe next month, so I want to resolve this quickly and don't want to deal with a bunch of BS at Sears in the process.

Successfully returned my dead DHP Group 31 and swapped it for an AGM Group 34. Have it setup for now, but will have to modify the Slee group 31 tray long term.
