Stopped by Wheelskins in Oakland to get a leather cover for steering wheel on the way to Mudrak to check up on a project.

Owner came out and measured my wheel and made one on the spot. They also did a small piece for something else. Great people.

It took two hours to put on bc I missed a hole and had to backtrack. It is kind of a pain but well worth it. It almost makes my 40 feel secure on the highway. Probably one of the best and only mods to this 40 I will allow myself.

I included the pic of the measurements in case others with same wheel size want to order it from them:

16 7/8" x 2 7/8"

I got a little more done on the axle. Installation should take place tomorrow.

@76 FJ40 , mcjb - THE BEST COLOR EVER!!!!

Also, finished adoption on blue's brother. Was all set to make this an organ donation situation but I'm having too much fun with this damned wagon! This is going to make for a tricky decision as I wasn't planning on two project children. Plus I REALLY don't want to have to post to seperate forums....

Like the floodlights? I might need to track down a set of the old eighties KC smiley face covers.

Tomorrow is the long haul from Salzburg to Bremerhaven. Already dealt with some seized parking brakes so hopefully no more suprises.

BTW - the German version of the DMV can suck it, mutch prefer the Dutch process is this area.

Hiking some trails over the long weekend - unfortunately the 40 is staying at home. Decided to use its time spent sitting to conduct a highly scientific leak test to identify my hard start issues.

My quadrajets fuel bowl drains overnight, leading to a LOT of cranking to get it started after it sits.

1. I cranked the truck up and got it idling, fuel bowl filled) then shut it down before it got hot (to prevent the fuel from boiling, if that's the issue)

2. Pinched off the fuel inlet to the carb with vice grips.

So if I come back in 3 days, and the carb is empty, I know my brand new rebuilt quadrajet is leaking (the Welch plugs are epoxied)

If I come back and the bowl is full, I have to assume the fuel line is somehow sucking the gas out of my carb and draining back through the (also brand new) mechanical fuel pump.

I can't seem to get a concensus on whether the mechanical Chevy pumps have integral check valves or not...but if this ends up being the case, I'll probably just install a check valve in the line somewhere to prevent the drain back.

The good news is - no sign of gas in the oil this time...

Well, experiment failed

Got home today, and tried to fire up the truck - fuel bowl was bone dry...

This is quite a mystery. This is the second quadrajet I've had that exhibited this hard start issue. The fuel has to be going SOMEWHERE...But on BOTH carbs, the welch plugs (often to blame for fuel leak down) were epoxied. On the previous one, I drilled, tapped, and installed threaded plugs...

The engine wasn't even allowed to warm up enough to get it hot enough to cause fuel boiling/percolation. Even with modern ethanol-based fuels, I'd be truly amazed if it was evaporating in a day or three...

I'm at a loss!

Would it make sense to 1) remove the carb, set it 'up' on a stand and put some fuel in the bowl - see what happens / if leak present below? Or 2) set a 1/8th shot glass worth of fuel next to carb and measure evaporation rate?

Yeah, I've thought about that...I haven't done it yet, but what I've heard is the leak down is usually so slow through the plugs that it evaporates before you notice it...

the shot glass concept would sort of work...but the glass would evaporate quicker than the fuel bowl because there is more surface area. I would be REALLY surprised if I was losing a full fuel bowl of fuel to evaporation overnight.

Seems like a bench test of some sort will be next though...

Finally got some time in the garage this weekend. Cleaned up the 4 speed and transfercase a bit and put them in a corner, finished welding in the drivers floor, started stitching in the drivers rocker patches, braced the tub for 1/4 panel removal, and used the plasma to start removing the rusted out rear of the bed.

If you need assistance in the Regensburg area, PM me. I monitor this all day long.

The axle installation is complete. That's about 55 hours of work. Now I'm ready for the test fit of the body.

Finally cut the circular slots in the old model bib so I could swap in my later model head lights. Installed the bib and lights and took the 40 out for a spin. Man what a difference the Procar seats make! Pretty nice finally having shoulder belts as well.

I really like the looks of that cover. Got any pictures of where the cover stops and starts (the seam)? Also, how much was it?

View attachment 1285674 Total with tax $65.65. One seam at the very middle bottom. I think you can get it perforated if u want.
I really like the look of the cover. Do you know which years have the same diameter of wheel?

I've considered making a cover just like that... is it just leather, or was there a layer of padding under it also?

It's just leather. They let me pick out the hide bc I was there but they all looked the same. I though it might be too thin without another layer but it feels about right. I realized if I doubled the layer it would look ridiculous on that large wheel.

I'm not sure size differences but I can check the 1976 wheel in the next couple of weeks.

Got my new seats and tuffy console put back in after modifying the seat brackets to accommodate the Tuffy. Cut the original buckle tabs of and followed @GA Architect method. Used 90 degree seat belt brackets from CCOT and found some thick grade 8 washers at Lowes. Now just to get the seat belt retractors mounted. Broke off the roll bar bolt so I'll be drilling that out next.

@74HogGuy What seats are those? I've seen them here and there but never found out what bran seats they were. I like the look and sounds like the feel is pretty nice as well.
