There are tricks that can be done to get rings to seat better. One is to pull long hills in almost too high of a gear, not quite lugging, but almost. Then, engine brake down the same hill in *almost too low of a gear, letting the engine slow the rig down.
I've also seen a pinch of AJAX powder or Bar Keeper's Friend cleaning powders being dropped into a spark plug hole, used as a mild abrasive which will let the ring and cylinder surface get a better seal once worn in a bit. The powder will be cycled out of the motor and will leave through the exhaust, and won't harm anything.
These are old tricks from long dead hot rodders I knew in a different life, but they've worked for me in the past.
As always, read up on it yourself before you try stuff. But it could save you some labor if it works for you. Worst case scenario, you end up pulling it apart and replacing rings anyway.
This is gold. Can you elaborate more on when the rings will no longer seat and none of this will work? I did the long pulls, my compression has steadily gone up. Rig is parked until I can reseal this header for the 4th time. Vacuum leak is an issue!
Thanks for this old time advice and may it never die…

Same for me..3.70 and 31’s. I am about 17% off and I do use that iPhone speedometer. But, when I don’t have it, I’m speeding thru spots where they now have signs…SPEED ENFORCEMENT ZONE. MANDATORY COURT APPEARANCE REQUIRED.

I do a bunch of mental calculations but, I rather enjoy the ride…😂
I’ve been considering an H55F, but if I can drop a 3.70 into the transmission I have now (4 Spd), I’m thinking I could drive at a lower rpm and faster speed. At least 65 mph? Is this your experience? Thanks

3.70’s would be the front and rear differential gear ratios which I believe you may already have. I’m not as versed on the non-NA specs though.

Thanks for your feedback.
New cowl vent drain tubes from City racer. I put some old screen under the vent to maybe keep out some crud. Was leaking into footwell. Wish i remembered the grommets too, lol

That's a great idea. Following your lead.

I am running 3.70 diffs, an H41 transmission, and 33” tires, and can do 65 mph all day long. At about 2,500 rpm. It will do 75-80 if you really need to, but I don’t like to if I don’t have to.

Much appreciated. That's what I needed to know. I have 30 inch tires (265/65/17 tires and 17 X 7.5 rims ). I'll plan to get the new diffs and tires when the current tires get wear out. Have a great afternoon.

As @Skreddy mentioned earlier, you likely have 3.70:1 diffs already.

I'm not exactly sure. This is a 1981 Colombian truck. How can I tell? Is there something on the VIN plate that indicates what transmission and diff's I have? I see on the VIN plate it says H41?

As @Skreddy mentioned earlier, it seems that you have 3.70:1 diffs indeed (Axle: KO52).

Like @1911 , recently have 3.70 diffs in my ‘75 FJ40 and spent a few days last week testing and pushing a few limits…easily could cruise at 85..but I don’t really need to… I’m around 20% change…gets a bit squirrelly at this speed

Fitted the new exhaust manifold & replaced the exhaust pipe rubbers (all of which were broken)...and found the rear electrics connector wiring has a serious dose of green death..wires snapped when l moved the block and ended up with no tail lights...so tomorrow its onto fixing that & whatever else snaps...if the drama keeps up l might go back to nearly finishing my kitchen just for a change.... ;)

Did a dry and wet compression test today. To see where I’m at and if I want to pour abrasives into my combustion chamber walls to seat rings. at 5800 in elevation. How do these numbers look to everyone?

Hands covered in oil typing these out!

Cold Results from 4 months ago. Swapped rocker assembly since then as well. Things look better (more consistent) than they did I think. Used a different Oreillys gauge, perhaps lowering numbers. Valves have been adjusted before all tests.

I’ve commented on your posts before and not trying to be rude, but it never sinks in. You need to take this to someone who knows what they are doing. You may not even have a problem and could be chasing snake oil cures. People here give you specifics to check and report back but then you have buddies or coworkers who are car guys tell you something else, but that can’t explain compression tests; supposed Cruiserhead Experts that can’t help distinguish the difference in vacuum leaks and exhaust leaks.

You’ve spent a ton of time and money rebuilding one engine and you are on the path of repetition. Lots of people here have given you advice but it’s never taken……. There’s a reason people have stopped answering your questions in the 60 section so you started asking them in the 40 section.

In short, again, if your rings aren’t seated: they’s aint’s goin seat.

This was a one owner truck I purchased here in Bogotá. I have all the original documents from its importation from Japan. 🇯🇵 Additionally I have a full folder of service records, owners manual, tools etc. Original set of keys were also provided.

That’s awesome history to have. No offense intended, the font on your vin plate just looked odd to me. None of my cruisers have had that font. I also have a 1982 Colombian FJ43.
