I took advantage of some milder temperatures to shoot some paint (Toyota 854). Got the gas tank cover, transmission tunnel, running boards and some hinges painted up. Should be able to install the tunnel & gas tank cover later this week, and get at least the driver's seat back in.
@ToyotaMatt thank you for the info and pictures! I did have brand new part number 77310-14070 Cap in the glove box, so I put it on. I haven't checked this week to see if my tank is pressurizing, just keep forgetting. I also do have brand new 90917-10020 Check Valve sitting in my parts shed. I never installed it because the Microfiche scans seem to say that for '78 it was only required in Canada, take a look:

What do ya'll think? I know a lot of people on here with '78s do have it installed. I also do not have the OEM charcoal canister, maybe even more reason to run it? I've been too busy to try anything since I lost the vented cap. Oh your comment about it not being street legal; did Daddy Government decide we couldn't have vented gas caps? Makes me want to find that thing even more!

if you don't have one this is your issue ...
ALL OEM TOYOTA GAS and DIESEL caps ARE Vented one way inward after ONLY 1972 , the flip down fuel door is the first oem vented cap till present day

Too much to narrate - and I'm really thinking of starting a thread (not a build thread, cuz' that would indicate I have a plan) to spare the masses in this thread (this is what did you do after all, not what didn't you do).
I tried to combine the photos so there are fewer but get the gist - it didn't happen if no pictures.
Doors rattle and also no bushing with the pins so ordered some hinge pins - but need roof off, ok - few broken bolts (3) (and I used Kroil well before) later and an assist, roof off. I Like the OEM part sticker (same in the 3rd picture)- not bad rust on drip rail but something missing in that first photo on the left.
Second photo - there you are - even though I had 6 of the 7 larger rivets looking from the top, none were actually connected inside (I would feel a breeze on my head on the highway and thought that's different). And Crusty Rusty there! Need to clean that, find a good replacement for those 7 rivets and reunite the two (it is Valentines day after all). Saw a thread for refinishing your roof and have watched @zerotreedelta clips too. Will pop off the rivets on rain drip and go from there - might be a summer project and just drive topless for a while.
Took the center link apart for rebuilding - parts soaking for cleaning as I type - will paint - do the drag link too - then put the steering back, sometime.
Engine woes continue - 2 issues - engine and carb - the carb secondary failed the paper clip test, took off secondary diaphragm, and it holds when I manually place a vacuum on it (over 20 seconds).... so something with the carb (I get vacuum in the advance port for example when stepping on gas) -
I don't know where to describe engine - hence a thread to those really interested. Oh yeah, also removed the ERG stuff and saw one of those Land Cruiser (FJ40) signs at Hobby Lobby today and bought that at 40% off.
Parts are inbound - snow in the forecast - and I think I hear a bourbon calling me

Got a few pieces cleaned in the blast cabinet last night. Prepping all the parts that will be painted "pewter" so I paint that stuff soon. Bought a couple rattle cans of pewter from Cruiser Corps, figure I'll get the most mileage from the cans painting in one batch.
Starter motor was starting to die and I don't want to be stranded high and dry when does eventually go.
Anyone who has ever had to get at the starter on a 1 or 2uz knows what this entailed....

Put new contacts in the starter and put it all back together.
Now she starts on the first touch of the button

Was able to source one of the hardest to find parts on the path to eventually return the air intake and carb to stock. A little bit crusty, but solid and should look great with a sand blast and powder coat.

Mark - you are right they would be a cup of cheer. However the ride can't be there until Saturday - and that would be an issue as I understand it. I will call and leave a VM - at 6 am your time.

It has been a while since I posted, and even longer since I worked on the 40, but it is still trucking along.
I had it out for the annual Keystone Cruisers breakfast up in Lancaster, PA a couple weeks ago. Good times, and always good to see everyone.
The Clustertruck was the only 40-series represented this year - but the newer, fancy-pants rigs were out in full force.

Mark - the only complication I see is that the Chariot tomorrow with be a jeep! Ha. Might be the only jeep there tomorrow, and would be easy to spot.
Painted the valve cover (old pic for comparo), installed the dizzy, cheap Amazon roof racks seem decent, tinkered with some other stuff.
