Probably a relay attack. Faraday box/pouch is the answer.. or as I've read online, find a cool vintage lunchbox to keep near your entry way and toss your key in there.

Had a two for one today. My wife, son, and I were traveling home from a conference. We stopped for lunch just over two hours away from home and when we got back in, the battery light was on.

The gauge still read around 12v so I figured we could make it home. Within the next hour the gauge was down to nearly 9v, and VSC, Brakes were indicated.

I took the next exit, as the AC and all power went out. Coasted into a church parking lot, popped the hood, and was surprised to find the radiator was cracked. I never noticed the temp on the dash be higher than normal.

Towed it home to my mechanic to check the battery, alternator, and replace the radiator.

always sad to see it on the flatbed :( Hopefully a quick and simple fix then back in action.

Well I said goodbye to her today. Found a Raptor R for 2500 over msrp and pulled the trigger. Part of me misses her already.

my impulse would be towards violence, even though I know it’s only a property crime.
It’s not just property. They stole his time when they stole that vehicle. The time it took to earn the money to pay for it, the time and headaches it will take to deal with the insurance company, the time without the vehicle, and on and on. Thieves have taken something he will not be able to recoup. They aggressed first, violence would not be an escalation.

Old penal code: caught stealing = hand cut off. There would be no need for catalytic converter cages anymore

To pile on, time is constant. In essence, taking a part of his life that he has no way to get back.

Yes, anything one spends significant time working on, cleaning, modding, admiring etc becomes more than property. The right judge might even agree with that kind of argument. Y2kc0wb0y in one respect is lucky that he had not owned it more than e few months, but it was a great color. Doesn’t Toyota have some kind of anti-theft provision, or is that just Lexus?

Hide-A-Key - FINALLY found a good solution after a few false starts.

When out hiking / biking / fishing / shooting / etc - concerned about dunking / dropping / losing / breaking a key. Get back after a few hours or days out, and you are SOL standing next to your 'cruiser saying to your buddy "but I thought *you* had the key...".

Cheap ($24), pretty sturdy like a micro Pelican case, quite strong magnets along with a slot for a ziptie or velcro. Most important - fits the fob perfectly. Here is the Amazon link where I found it.

To keep the keyless system from recognizing it, wrapped in thick aluminum foil before putting in the case.

Going to have to be careful now of the Venn diagram of who I park next to and who reads this thread... :)

Thanks for passing along. Is the idea to just keep this under your car using the magnet in case you lose your key?

So far so good. All of the data from the couple of weeks of logging shows that the shroud/fan arrangement keeps the battery 30-40 F cooler than underhood air temps. I can't say for sure all of that is necessary but it makes me feel better. Other than that the battery itself is a great performer. So much run time for the fridge and Starlink with 135 amp hours.
Looking to get back to the project and put in the second battery. Are you still happy with the Dakota DL+135 battery and did you try the Dakota Lithium Power Gauge App?

I really don’t think it matters if they are spoofing key fobs. I don’t know what the next logical step would be for securing the key to the car to prevent this.

I looked in my 2011 docs, and what I was thinking of is the subscription service where you call Toyota and if you filed a police report, they disable the car remotely. It almost seems like the insurance companies should underwrite that and make it free to all insured owners.

If the battery is out of the key relay attacks won’t work. Or the foil wrap..

Plus I personally view these hide a keys as something to use in limited circumstances like at a hiking trailhead. I wouldn’t be using it full-time.

Boring maintenance post:

Oil change with
5w-30 Mobile 1 FullySynthetic (high mileage blend)
OEM Toyota/Lexus filter
ODO 245,656

Wish I had tad more motivation to permanently black out the chrome all around but keenly away getting the old plastifie off will be a chore. After a couple years of NC sun it definitely doesn’t peel off like in the marketing videos…
