Got back last week from 4300 miles on the road - Everett->SLC->Zion->Grand Canyon->Monument Valley->Moab->Jackson Hole/Yellowstone->Everett with a lot of side trips. Not too much off of the road, but I still really enjoyed having the LX in front of my steering wheel. Definitely glad I had done nav-delete earlier, and that I was mentally prepared for paying for about 430 gallons of gasoline.

While in Zion we drove up the Kolob (Heights?) road and to the reservoir at the end. A little fun driving the dirt track around the reservoir including a big mud pit, and got turned around at a washout I wasn't prepared to attempt. A beautiful drive though - just as spectacular as Zion itself.

Driving around the floor of Monument Valley - really took an effort to hit all of the sand, rocks, dips.. should have known from the groans of 3/4 of the passengers (my 4yo son only yelled "Again! Again") that off roading in Moab was going to be vetoed!

A little side trip from Monument Valley up the Moki Dugway (fun for me, nerve wracking for passengers!) and to Natural Bridges.

The one 'trail' we attempted to run - Willow Flats Road from inside Arches out to the highway. Made it as far as the gate before turning around. Nobody but me was having fun, and 'fun' could be exchanged for any number of other more extreme adjectives. Despite the reliability of my truck and the 100s in general, I kept thinking 'if I break this, in 100 degree heat, miles from anyone, my wife will murder me and live off of my life insurance'. Only knocked the hitch on the ground twice, no new scratches, and nothing inside rattled loose. I did hit a medium sized rock going about 20mph with the right front tire - definitely an 'oh s***' moment for all of us - which reminded me to slow down and pay close attention. Never found the dinosaur footprints at the gate - bummer moment. My wife's closing comment as we rejoined the main road inside Arches "Now, do you have that out of your system?"

Side note - I loved watching a really set up 80 from an outfit in Moab pull into the little picnic area at the start of WF road, disgorge a family + driver, and set up a really good looking picnic. We headed down the road before they wrapped up, and I kept saying 'man, that outfit and that truck, they are going to do this road with that family and have a great time' but I never saw them, and when we got back to the picnic area they had gone - we had a great laugh thinking about some family paying a ton of money for a tour of Arches in a totally set up off road Cruiser and never getting off the asphalt. (I mean, I paid a ton of money for a Cruiser and barely got off the asphalt but... that's different!)

A great road trip despite the heavy fuel consumption and cost. My only notice, and I appreciate any thoughts on this, was how hard it was to maintain speed going up over the steep passes. Our tent trailer is probably under 2k loaded down, and we've got another 750-1000lbs in the truck in people and gear, but I was really struggling to keep it over 25mph going up some of the roads. We went over a pass (Douglas Pass?) in Colorado on 139 that was around 8k feet and just poked up and over it, same climbing out of Flaming Gorge, and Jackson (? - West of Jackson Hole on 22) Pass were the same story. I'm not in any hurry, and I let the 4 speed kind've feel its way ( a lot of 2nd gear) but does this sound pretty normal? I didn't get a feel like anything was wrong, I could accelerate if I forced it to downshift, but I was surprised at how ineffective 3rd gear felt and I didn't even think about 4th.

Doesn't sound right to me. I have one more gear in mine, but am never out of 3rd or 4th on even the steepest grades, always nearish the speed limit for whatever freeway or road I'm on. Here's a recent thread with a similar problem/description: Towing and no power

In my opinion it sounds fairly normal loaded down with that much gear, people and bigger tires. I've "struggled" over some really high passes here in Colorado myself. Can't recall getting as low as 25mph but keeping it at 40mph fully loaded with gear/people/bumpers/bigger tires at 10k ft above sea level or more seems normal to me.
Colorado mountains will eat cooling systems and transmissions for breakfast, I see all manner of older trucks like ours on the side of the road going up high grade passes.

My BFG KM3 33/12.5/18’s finally came in because they were back ordered 6 weeks..... right after HIH. Oh well. My KO2’s performed just fine So far I love the look!

Going up mountain passes, I drive my truck like a manual. I keep it over 3k rpms minimum, and that keeps me over 60 mph on most climbs. If you leave it in D, your transmission will run way hotter as it hunts around for the right gear. If I'm in 2nd at 4800 rpms and going 55 mph, then that's fine.

Those look fantastic. If they handled better in the snow I would be all for them. Do you run spacers or do you still have AHC?

I am running Bora 1.25” wheel spacers and I am on AHC still.

Royal Purple 5W30 and Genuine Toyota Oil filter was yesterday’s what did I do to my LX470 this week and oh boy it’s like flicking a switch the vibration on the engine both at idle, acceleration including cruising was immediately turned off. Ran smooth as a silk! Engine noise levels toned down too on idle! Very quiet!

I'm looking at getting this awning as well. I'm curious how long it took you to set it up?
Install is very easy. The rack comes with the mounting brackets and hardware. Measure the spacing of the brackets on the roof rack, transfer dimensions over to awning, install brackets on awning in marked locations and mount the whole thing to the rack. I'll probably order another pair of brackets for peace of mind, since there's only two and the awning is massive. The final thing is to open the rack and pick a location for, and then mount, the cleat to keep the awning open and tensioned.

As far as setup, it's also pretty easy. Undo the velcro on the hinge side, undo the zipper, unclip the awning beams and open one at a time, folding down the support poles as you go. After the last pole, you clip the webbing strap onto the cleat and the awning is essentially done. You can add wind resistance by staking down and guying out the support poles.

I just finished a similar run, Douglas Pass was cool!
We were loaded too.
We were all counting the switchbacks aloud on the way up to Flaming Gorge. That one kinda kept going...
I figured out to turn on the ECT and turn off the over drive, and it seemed to find the gear it wanted quicker, and pull the hills better.
According to the Scan gauge, the hottest water temp I got to was 207F, and at the top of Douglas pass, the Trans Temp was the same as the water temp. I pulled off at the top, and aimed the rig into the wind and let it idle while the wife took pictures.
I worked it harder than the previous 2 owners, that’s for sure. But she always cooled down quick. It was 104 that day when we camped at DINO.
Does anyone know what temp the fan clutch is supposed to kick on?

Dang. Let me know what you find. I am chasing a similar thing.

I’m doing the same. Definitely a worn /damaged lower ball joint won’t help, but for me, the tech thinks it’s the lower control arm bushing. We’re doing a new LCA (second ball joint pressed in and risky to replace again) along with all new sway bar bushings and extended links. I’ll post an update when she’s back...

Went to my buddy's upholstery shop in Tempe, Az. He made me a custom mattress and cover for my roof top tent since the OEM mattress was too hard and not wife approved. The mattress is 4inch memory foam with 2 inch high density base. The cover used the existing top and bottom and boxed out the the sides to accommodate the taller mattress
