what gas mileage is the cruiser capable of?

i know i'm waaay below what i should be getting right now (8 mpg city) but what can i shoot for? 1978 2F 3.70s and 32s.

Not much better - I get about 10 MPG in my '76 w/ 32's (4.11s)...even less in my 55 (F155). On the bright side - I can squeeze 14 MPG out of my FZJ...Cruisers like gas!

12mpg average would be good, your set up should be able to get 16-17mpg on the highway.

I'm totally new to this, but I would like to know what I have so if you can shed some light, please do. Someone did tell me that 78s were all 4.11s, but not according to what i've read here.

i calculated about 8mpg city as well last time i checked, but thats with my F. you should be able to get a little better than that. in light of my new engine problems i'd imagine i'm getting more like 5mpg

I read somewhere that Canadian 40/55's got 3.70s earlier than the US models did...I know all US spec. '78 models have 4.11s. Anyone?

It's pretty erratic, but currently, I am getting 14-16mpg
That's with a desmogged, performance tuned 2F with a header, non-usa distributor. bored over .030 with a 273 degree RV cam and oversized valves.
I also run an SM420, 4.11's lockright in the rear and 35" Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's.

I found that a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires (OEM, don't get anything else) and a quick scuffing of the points yielded my good results.

Also, as a side note, I am fiddling with the timing and carburation almost constantly. Keep that in mind.

I'm just impressed you guys are getting miles per gallon. I think I'm still working with city blocks per gallon with my SBC 350.

With my slighty modded and desmogged 2f in my 79 with 3.70's and 33's I seem to get between 12 and 15 mpg.

383 and 37's I get about 15 city and 18 highway with 4.11's (no overdrive tranny)

After hunting season the 4bt and 4spd auto are going in and hopefully my mpg goes up more.

Correct. K=9.5" ring, 05=3.70, 2=open diff.

For the part year and a half I've been getting unlimited gas milage in my 62 FJ. I pushed out of the garage last week and it still holding half a tank......Same as what was in it when it went in.

I have not calculated it but mine seems awful-of course the reason I have not calculated it is I am not sure of the tank size I think it is 12 gallons.

I have a bone stock '78 40. Bone stock. 4.11's and 235's. I get between 13 and 16 MPG. I live at 5000' altitude. I am completely smogged, I redid my vacuum tubing and rebuilt mt air pump. I also adjusted my carb and tuned the ignition.

I am guessing you could do better, esp w/ 3.70's and 32's...
