What do I have? 40 newb (5 Viewers)

Sitting outside in the 50* sun with the new guy while mom catches up on some sleep.

Trying to organize thoughts on what I want or need to do.

Higher Priority items : in no order

-manual oil pressure check

- water pump bypass hose (ordered city racer)

- distributor redo ( I have myself convinced I half asses the repair and it’s going to cost me an engine) so I plan to do it a little better this time. Add new plugs and wires at the same time

- valve seals - I researched this for about 2 hours yesterday and never came up with a good answer. Basically boiled down to I need to pull my valve cover and see what valve seals I have now.

- rear axle bearing/ seals/ shafts, pinion seal - one axle seal seeps, both axles had pitting where the bearing rides and you can hear them while driving. It’ll be hard not to add a locker at the point. Budget allowing.

- rear main/ oil pan gasket seal. New throw out bearing and transfer case seals.

- set rear pinion angle. I have a small driveline vibration at speed and I have a pretty big angle separation between transfer case output and rear yoke.

- clutch fan or even a plastic fan. I have a 6 blade steel fan now that’s very functional, also very loud

- tie rods / drag link - I need to figure out what pitman arm I have now - this would be a great time to seal up the Saginaw box.

- power steering pump- leaks at front seal.

- re pack front wheel bearings

- re torque everything

- trim U bolts

- remove broken bolts in spring pin brackets.

- install shackle frame bushings- ordered.

- finish hardtop fiberglass project. Needs some glass repair, needs paint, drip rail needs finished. Plan to do some sort of insulation at the same time and something for a head liner

- paint removal on everything that hasn’t been done yet.

-rear sill replacement. This one scares me more than anything LOL

It's amazing how some things seem so hard but after you've done them a few times it's just another thing. The rear sill is one of them. Just steel layers. I just did another on my build thread.

I need to source one of these.

Is Toyota Matt the only place that has one? I haven’t seen the most inspiring ordering confidence from him lately. Also shows he has no stock.

I’ll try the part number at the dealer tomorrow. I would really like my coolant gauge to work in the cluster.

Where you able to find this? I was going to order from him as well, but I don't have months for him to figure out how to run a business.

I'm using 5W-30 Valvoline Restore and Protect, an Aisan (single-pumper), mid-grade octane, and I just drive when it is cold. I don't need the defroster, unless the sun is behind the clouds. You can run a 30-grade summer oil as long as it is under 90F according to the FSM. The oil is allowing the rings to seal-up better, or something is making the engine have much much more cold-torque and less cold-throttle sensitivity. It used to foul all six plugs. Now it fouls none of the electrodes, two of them get kinda suity on their faces, but they are self-cleaning so they fire just fine. I probably went about 100-miles on the first oil change, tons of suity material in it. Rings failing to function is a reality, and you'll find plenty of Mudders who have posted broken rings. The cam lobes should be fine because the 2F engine surfaces are no longer attacked by a high dose of calcium-based detergent, resulting in caking internal exhaust surfaces with zddp, that and it is a tractor motor, not a high-rpm motor.

I'm not sure that anyone needs to use the Toyota Owner's Manual recommended temp-oil viscosity chart, or ditch the Weber 38/38 carburetor. But, I have to report that I get better economy, cleaner plugs, dirtier oil at a shorter change interval, and more cold-torque than ever.

Last Saturday I swapped my bypass hose
With a new one from city racer, buttoned it up and finally filled it with coolant today. If that is any indication of the last 7 days just insanely busy. Not complaining, however sometimes time needs to slow down.

Today was one of those days. Slowed down a little. 60* and sunshine, slight breeze here and there. The family and I spent from 11am to 5 pm outside enjoying it. Using some scraps we built a stand for my beer fridge, built a Barbie house, and a Lego hotel, complete with helicopter pad.

Hooked the 40 to the trailer and drug it out in the back yard to air out from its winter storage. Maybe it’ll get used soon.

Good day. Supposed to be absolutely beautiful the next few days here.

We’re hoping for 60*+ for the next 4 days…prior to this we’ve had 40-50 mph wind gusts, cold days and cold nights. If you stood in the sunlight, it still felt cold. The “ tv weather folk” are saying there will be no wind… that’s good because our house is in the middle of an oak tree forest and the leaves are a foot thick or better in a ton of spaces…

For the first time in 4 months, I have zero leaves to blow out around the house and can finally do some Land Cruiser stuff. I have yet to get the rear ambulance door glass reinstalled from August so….tomorrow it could happen

That’s “A whole lotta Rosie”…

Foreshadowing?

She ain't exactly pretty
Ain't exactly small
Forty-two, thirty-nine, fifty-six
You could say she's got it all 😎

Wild Friday night. Tornado hit town here and A huge path for a long ways.

Saturday morning I went out and realized how thankful I am. The tornado was within 1/4 mile of my Exs house with my kids in it. When we built that house it has a 3 side concrete room as a utility room so it’s way safe. Also way too close for comfort.

Zero damage to the house, we cut for a few hours to be able to get down the driveway. Winched trees with the 40, cut half fallen trees, then went to help at the daycare my 3 year old attends and newborn will go. They had a complete loss of their house, however the garage and daycare are perfectly fine. Tornados are such strange things.

Truly amazing to see the community come together and see the amount of people helping others.

First picture is my old driveway about halfway done cutting. Second is the tornado path 1/4 mile away, third is the driveway to daycare after they cut it out.

Very very fortunate to not have anyone hurt. A couple towns away was not so fortunate.

Wow! - glad your family was safe

On the good side they have firewood for the next winter if not two

that's some Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life shizz there...

Another week, another tank of fuel. Finally able to test out my siphon setup before tumbling last night. I was low on fuel and low on time to run to the fuel station. So while she changed I siphoned fuel from Jerry and we went on our way.
After tumble we topped off with fuel and it held 16 gallons 😳

Beautiful day today, time for a quick car wash.
