Another fun day in 1FZ-FE land….

Care to guess the material found in the lower oil pan and oil pickup?

What we found when doing a quick upper pan arch reseal.

As I keep telling everyone, these trucks are 30+ years old and people buy them for cheap and then they are overwhelmed by how much it really costs to keep a classic/antique vehicle on the road.

I sometimes just want to tell anyone coming into the shop it’s going to be a minimum of $10K. That way I don’t have to engage in the back and forth of wasting time to explain everything.

Maybe AI can help me! 😂😂🙄🙄
Are there any tell tail signs of a bad timing chain guide? Other than finding plastic bits in the oil pan? Kinda got me spooked… when I had my PS pump out I noticed little black chunks of what felt soft FIPG like sprinkled around the gears cleaned it and chalked it up as exactly that. I don’t have any sort of weird slap or tick though….

Repaired the inner fender rust that builds under the air filter mount. Cut out the bad, welded in new plate, painted between the plate, welded up the spot welds and applied seam sealer around the top and sides of the plate, left the bottom open to drain. 2k epoxy primer, then found some generic silver spray paint that good-enough matches the Moonglow. Good as new!

Too cheap for the expensive chevy guy patina restoration products. Heard this stuff worked. Gave it a try. My paint was GONE. Im shocked at results.

Does that act like a wipe-on clear coat of sorts, like those other, car-specific products do? I've been experimenting with some wet sanding in a few spots to see what sort of results I could get but after doing it I'll need to throw something on top to protect what's left. I was looking at Poppy's but that stuff's EXPENSIVE! You're not kidding!

Yep put in a rag and wipe. That’s 3 coats. You could get really crazy if you wanted. Here is a side by side with only 1 coat

Got the 91 back. The boat mechanic I found in my beach town replaced the bad # 6 injector and all the seals, o rings, gaskets for the others and cleaned the injectors. Also had him replace the leaking oil cooler and gaskets while he had the truck. I have a hate-hate relationship with draining the coolant on this thing so was happy to pay someone else another hour of reasonable labor while he was already working on the truck. Unfortunately, now have a small exhaust leak somewhere near the exhaust manifold. Not sure why that materialized now. Two steps forward and one back. But she’s driving great (like a tractor) and is back as my beach rig. At some point will be replacing the whole exhaust anyway.

Your doing it right with new/good parts and at the rate you’re going you will on the trail long before @baldilocks 😂
Come on Steve get that thing going how many years has it been now.

I’m loaded up and heading to Sand Hollow in the morning 😎

Going to have to invite @hisandhers80s out to hit some trails when he’s up and running 😉
Damn I need to move back to Southern Utah too much good wheeling in less than 2 hours in any direction 😢

Replaced hoses at Heater Control Valve + Heater Control Valve and Thermostat. Toyota red coolant was crusty in those areas indicating a leak. I bought a ton of hoses intending to do a cooling system overhaul, but...I decided not to succumb to scope creep (moreso because I wanted to get the kayaks out this weekend and not spend it wrenching) and install every single thing I bought.

Also found out that the PO had bypassed the rear heater - which I intended to do anyway, but...Idk. Somehow, I'm offended I didn't think of it or get to it first. Oh well.

I’ll hop on the paint bus. Got my wheels professionally rattle-canned by my 9 year old in my driveway.
Going to try to tackle fenders and bumpers today. Somebody before me did a PPJ.

Wheels look pretty good after zero prep and a 14 hour cure.

Knocked out the EGR “delete” with the Hutto kit. Shoved the bearings inside the hoses and reconnected them.

Any chance you’ve serviced the heater control valve cable? PO disconnected it on mine and the valve moves fine but the cable does not. I’ve read that’s mechanically attached to the temperature slider behind the dash? Is that right? I haven’t ventured in to the dash yet but curious what I might find when I do.

Man, I parted out a ‘97 to scavenge parts. Pulled out the entire dash, right down to the firewall. It’s not a fun project. What year is your truck?

Had the dash partially disassembled the dash for a stereo install and to replace all dash lights on our 94. You can access the cable your after with a partial disassembly.

I don’t recall specifically on the 97 about access to that cable, but it was easier to work on the 97’s dash.
