Had a funny noise. Rebuilt my whole front axle. Still had a funny noise...

Stripped out the front drive shaft. Front UJ was loose, rear was was completely rogered, tight and notchy. Violence ensued. Installed new UJ's. Cleaned it all up with wire brush and wire wheel on the angle grinder.

Was going to paint the tube but thought I might unbalance it. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Put it all back together.

Funny noise has now gone. Fears of imminent catastrophic failure much diminished.

Was in such a state I think I will do the rear shaft next.

Been there done that. My current solution is to avoid a 2nd wife..... I got off lucky with the 1st one. From a risk assessment perspective marriage is very risky behavior for men in the USA.

For instance more than 95% of child support payments are made from men too women. The legal system is biased and sexist, it punishes men and awards women.

I know there are plenty of married couples that are happy and hat's off to them. But my generation really seems to struggle with successful marriage. For the most part, based on my experience, it seems that millennial women are selfish and do not have the required dedication for a successful marriage. I am sure there are exceptions but I would rather be hunting, fishing, and wheeling my cruiser than wasting time searching for the exception.

Best of luck to you man. The key component for me moving on after my first marriage was introspection. If you’re blaming others it’s probably your fault.

You’ll meet the right woman when you least expect it. Even if you’re living in your parents basement.

Back on topic, I picked up a new driveshaft from the dealership for $350. Makes the pain in the ass job of swapping ujoints even less attractive.

Mmmm, shiny...

I found installing news UJ's very easy. It's getting the old ones out that requires all the violence and swearing
Removing the old UJ's shouldn't be traumatic. I remember watching videos galore on this and they all involved much violence. Most try and force the UJ out of the spider in the wrong direction. I ended up making a simple tool that allowed me to remove the joints much easier and without the violence. I'm no tool fabricator so I'm sure someone has done a better job but mine was free and so far has worked on 100% of the DS's have used it on...even if it is only 3 😁

My weekend started early so I took off to the hills for a little evening hiking and shed hunting after finishing the days responsibilities.

Than I stopped by the local sportsmens warehouse right before they closed and I got lucky!!!!!!!! You know it's bad when two boxes of ammo are worth showing off.

Sweet round that 243. My son's deer rifle, a Savage, is one of the best shooting rifles I have ever seen. I have threatened him, if he ever sells it, I will disown him! The pic below is when I sited it in for him. I was walking it over and as I dialed it in and thought something was wrong with the scope because I could not see where it was shooting through the 30x spotting scope that was fluttering in the wind. Finally, after the 4th shot, I realized the hole was larger than I thought and walked down to see what was going on. Immediately ripped the target off. That is a four shot group (through the same hole. Total of 6 - .243 rounds in the pic) next to the dime! 100 yards on a windy day, sitting on a plastic table with a cheap plastic gun rest.

Then his first deer with the same gun. The boy has all the luck! To keep it cruiser related, the last pic with me draggin the old tent trailer next to my brother's taco just before we hit pavement on the way out. One heck of a trip that one was!

Nice buck!!!!!! I love the .243, it is such a classic round and it is enjoyable to shoot. The .243 is such a versatile round. It can effectively be used to hunt pretty much any critter in the USA other than grizz, elk, and moose.

Agree completely. Great first "real" rifle for a child starting out. Great way to build good shooting habits with the light recoil. I truly love that gun and caliber. Wish my 270 and 22-250 shot that well. Heck, wish any of our guns shot anywhere close to that.

Nice!! Savage makes some... savage rifles. :)

My buddy has a Savage 17HMR, that is the most accurate thing I've ever shot. Such a fun small round to shoot.

+1, I have a Savage 17hmr as well, dime tacker. Super fun and accurate.

Bmag 17WSM, also has been good.

I don’t like the 90 degree bolt throw, cock on open, or their tang safety, or small mags but they are accurate, the floating bolt head is a neat innovation and barrel nut. Owned a model 16 for a while, but after a safety that didn’t disengage properly and not connecting with a really big elk I had enough. Went to a Steyr model M full stock and have had zero regrets.

Back to cruisers, it’s nice to have your storage shelves so full length rifles can fit in the space without taking up too much room.

Am I understanding this correctly? You shot at an elk with a 17WSM? If so you probably connected but the elk just laughed. It would be illegal to hunt elk with that caliber in Utah....

Beautiful mule deer. "Heavy" rack! What did it score and what were the mass measurements? How much did it weigh and how old? Looks like a very mature mule deer!

It measured 149 wet typical, and 179 without taking any deductions (non-typ) as I recall. 4 x 6 lost points. Not sure on the weight, the shop in Flagstaff said it was the heaviest deer they had seen all year. 106 lbs of deboned meat that we took home, yes a toad. The taxidermist put the deer between 6 and 7 years old. Called him a rock muncher as his teeth were so worn. He said some deer tend to pull vegetation from very close to the earth and their teeth wear faster. Based upon the teeth, he doubted it would have made it through the winter and definitely not another year.

Last day of the hunt for the boy, a bad hunt physically for him. There was a one morning and one evening he really did not want to go out so I kept the plans lite those days. No more than a mile from the truck, mild elevation changes but still able to glass. It was the most demanding hunt he has had but, the end result made it all worth it for him (and me)!

My brother pulled one from the same area about 5 years earlier, measured 179 dry. Just missed the book.

Beautiful mount, was this in AZ. I spend a lot of time exploring the famous AZ strip mule deer unit. I dream of drawing a tag out there one day....

Random, those blue tanks are from the company I work for

Yes, unit 10. Not many deer but, there are some of decent maturity there. Same here, lived here most my life and still have not hunted that area. My brother and I are talking about finally doing it though. I was up there a couple of years ago and the number of deer, compared to the center of the state, is incredible. I have also been amazed at how many there are between Jacob Lake all the way up 89 and 14 on the way to I-15 in Utah. Teaming with them.

Nope, that was the reference to the model 16 below, it was a 325WSM.

The BMag is a better rig IMO, although I bastardized it a bit (airsoft AICS chassis, etc)

The Steyr I have is a 9.3x62, similar to a 35 whelen or a .366 projectile in a 30-06 cartridge.
