First project as part of getting ready to swap a new 1FZ-F in: PS pump refresh. Tear it apart, clean, a few choice cuss words, and voila! $60 is better than $450. Parts not cleaned in first pic.

Do make sure the gear bevels are perfect or the engine will sound like it’s knocking.

1FZ PS gear is notorious for this. As are the 1Hx iterations pumps with gear-driven PS pumps.

Classic: “my engine is knocking after PS pump swap”…

Thanks, Beno, I’ll double check.

I don't know if I should be worried or not now. Those are next on the PM list. At least you didn't have to go full oxy/act torch on them.

What was the condition of the rods themselves like? I assume reusable if you ended up pulling the ends?
My rods were in surprisingly good condition. Actually it was a fairly easy endeavor as far as tie rod end replacement goes. The tightest one was the pitman/relay end and it popped out quickly using the puller and a couple hammer taps. All the others came off the truck with just the puller.

Once off I measured them to give me a ballpark idea of where to start, the soaked them with PB Blaster and started with the mapp gas. A few cycles of that and the turned right out.

The thing that really got me was when removing the steering damper bolt I boogered up the threads and had to repair them using a chisel since I couldn’t find my thread file. Should have just pressed it out with the bench vise and a couple of sockets instead of giving it a tap with a hammer while still on the truck.

Does anybody know what this might be? Have you ever seen this before? it's like chalk.

my research says it's from ehtanol gas. thats zinc oxide leached from the galvinized steel. yuck. anyone know where i can get a new tank (OEM) for less that $500 ?

I’d get a gas tank sealing kit before buying a new tank.
I'll second this. Years ago I used a POR15 tank sealing kit on the rusted/pinholed tank in my G-wagen, it worked wonders on cleaning and sealing the tank.

I always loved the inclinometer in some of the earlier Cruisers and Pajero’s also my speedo is out from bigger tyres, so picked up this eBay job.

Surprisingly good quality but I didn’t like the idea of sticking it to the dash, so having the spare DIN I decided to fit it inside. After butchering the housing, it became a point of no return, made the front face from some 3mm acrylic sheet, works pretty well
