This is important for me to but not exactly technical.

Purebred, my 71 Series, turned 20. Now it is old enough to vote or buying a beer in some states.

Looking back, ownership is a number of fond memories for me. Which includes 'Mud and its members. I am thankful for that.

Just got back from camping in a national park. Still a good test though, with 30° C temperatures and towing my little Kamparoo through the Rockies. I ran A/C the whole time but aside from one hill where water temp got to 210°F at the top (measured going IN to the rad) she stayed within safe specs. (EGT reached a max of 785F once).

But the tweaking never really ends so I'm going to eventually replace my 1998 condenser with a new one for better flow through to the rad. And I might try a Tridon high flow stat?

While we were there we ran into this really cool couple from Germany who had their hzj79 kitted out with a home built camper module on the back. It was super cool. And I admit it gave me traitorous thoughts...

No rain out west until driving home thru Nebraska Iowa. Real rain slowed traffic enough to get me caught in Omaha rush hour. Once out of that I stopped to get fuel. My right foot was soaked from a leak. I thought I fixed that years ago.

In one of my previous vehicles, I kept plastic grocery bags in my glovebox just for this occasion. I’d slip a bag over each shoe.

Still a work in progress.

Pending some vinyl upholstery, speaker grills, etc. and a whole lot more interior work, but here’s the product of many weekends of effort. Behind all this is 3-4 layers various types of sound and thermal insulation.

Two things will be obvious. I am not an OEM purist when it comes to non-mechanical things; and, I am a strict adherent to the “More is More” school of thinking when it comes to speakers.

Installed overhead console, modified to include two multiport always hot USB chargers, and two 3.5” coaxial speakers as a mono center channel. These are powered by a compact 4channel amp under the driver seat, that also powers the 4” coaxials in the dash. Rewrapped in headliner vinyl to match, color matched oak (close enough) light bezels and grilles.

Homemade ABS door cards, with a lot of extra small holes from mistakes made, changes of mind, etc., all of which will be covered with vinyl and hidden in due time. Upgraded to OEM armrests/pulls, and Oak hardware. 6.5”/tweeter components. 1/8” closed cell foam backing on all side panels for audio decoupling and added thermal insulation. Rivnuts all around, which will be covered by color matched caps later.

Two rear tables by Svnty out of Australia. They are absolutely bombproof, and completely noiseless while underway. I modified with LED license plate style lights for switched task lighting.

Went into the garage to check odometer for some paperwork and had a nasty surprise waiting. Passenger window shattered. Car has been in a garage since last driven. Can’t see any evidence that something hit the window. Temperatures haven’t been crazy - nothing above mid 80s. I’m scratching my head on this one.

One thing I have noticed is that old 70s the bracket that holds the glass tends to get rusty. Rust is of greater volume than steel. I might suggest having a look at that item. The good news is that new brackets and cranks are available. The part that maybe might be worth looking at is 69901/69902

It is that upper metal channel in the photo that I am referring to.

I made some progress on the brackets to raise one side of 76 series seats for use in the 75 troopy.

Those are bushings from a current generation 79 rear leaf spring shackle. The price was right at about 3 bucks each.

Swapped my non-oem AC belt for an oem AC belt in hopes of eliminating a really bad squeal coming from my AC Compressor and a chirp coming from the belt itself.

While I was removing the old belt I discovered that the tensioner bolt was only finger tight. After replacing the belt I had hoped that the loose tensioner was the cause of all my issues, but after a quick test drive I found that my AC compressor still made a harsh squeal right before parking; however the chirp from the belt is now gone.

Looks like I’ll be needing to replace the compressor :/ no worries though as I have already purchased a new one and just need to take it to a shop to replace the old one.

New wheels and tires. Against my better senses I had to put spacers on these, but overall I’m loving the look and I love how these drive.

Alternator decided to quit the other week so ordered all the bits to rebuild it. Should be good for another 20 years. Back together in time for a cracking sunrise.

I did that about a year ago. Getting the new rebuilt alternator in was extremely frustrating haha.

i did my brushes recently and only figured out once i had the whole thing out that you can replace the brushes in-place.... oh well in fourty years when they need doing again ill know how to do it in 15 min....

I just pulled the airbox out, was only 3 bolts and a couple of hose clamps. Then I had all the room in the world haha, would be tight otherwise. So could imagine the frustration
