Finally...tidy up some interior works considered relevant enough for the rig as my daily driving...tired of looking for brown color after market, so hand stiched using left over leather of my messenger bag project (as replacement of damaged old hand brake cover), put up new door trim and rear panel trim (just using cheap cat's scratcher self adhesive carpet..it works though!!) and icing the cake, of course the new seat cover !!!

The seat covers and the boot are great. Leather is so cool. But *please*, the next projects is to match the door covers and side panels, right?
Blue and brown is such an ***** combo. (But there is no argument on colors, I know and admit; no offense, just my personal opinion)
Cheers Ralf

More assessment on the bottom end of my 1986 3B after finding a few flakes in the oil pan. The engine was running well, no apparent problems, I just happened to be fixing an oil leak. No rod knock, or play I could feel before disassembly.

Here’s number 4:

The crank journal feels smooth. I need to clean and investigate further, and check 2 and 3.

I’m hoping I caught it in time to clean, polish, replace bearing shells, and keep running it for a while. I’ve got the pan spotless and will be changing oil and filter, and then will probably do a short change with oil analysis before too long.

My research seems to indicate that the connecting rod bolts are reusable, but it sounds like the main bearing cap bolts are TTY and therefore should be replaced once loosened. Can anyone confirm/deny? It also seems like the main cap bolts are NLA, which might influence my plans for further disassembly and examination.

We were about 10 miles back when I killed it. We spike camped half way. I hauled it out myself, save for one quarter a friend carried. But I did it in an unconventional way... ;-)

I took my cargo bike (not an ebike) and pedaled it on singletrack to set up camp, then pedaled it deeper on singletrack, left the bike on the trail, hiked in, shot the elk, packed it back out to the trail and it took 6 trips and 10 hours. Here's one of the hauls including our camp (tent and stove is in my backpack, food in the rear panniers, and clothing/sleeping kit in the front bag). The gnarliest was the meat bag with all the extra cuts. It had to weigh 100 lbs. Hauling it up and over three ridges and river valleys was brutal.

Just seen the article pop from The Radavist and was sure I recognised the bike!

Great read, thank you!

How many km / miles on it?
Mine is similar age (1985), 335kkm on it.
Also runs overall fine. Friends driving behind me at altitude in the Alps requeted a change of the valve stem seals, though 😆
But I also wonder how mine would look on the bottom end. So, interesting on how your rebuild will work out. Please keep us posted.
Good Luck 🤞 Ralf

Electrical infrastructure for the camper is in place including the box of the control panel. Some of the wires for the 'consumers' are as well. There is a small computer fan hooked to a thermostat behind the fridge inside the wheel well to circulate air in that cavity.

Galley is ready for painting. Powder coat gray. All doors and drawers are aluminum with a small 'finger' hole to open and latch with magnets. Under the built in fridge the cavity is for induction cooktop. The cavity facing out would be a gas cooktop so I can cook outside. The are 2 110V outlets on both side of the galley. The other 2 holes in the back are for a shore charger and the shower.

The 80 series speedometer is finally calibrated with a small electronic device made by lutzauto. Now I can try to install the 80 series CC.

Mine has 337,000km on it. Ran fine, still seemed to be making good oil pressure.

Can anyone help me identify this engine?
Thanks

New piston rings are in and I’ll be damned that she runs so perfect now. I took my time over the course of a few days to make sure it wouldn’t grenade when I fired her back up.

Idles smooth, turbo spools up louder and stronger now. Egt’s are significantly lower.

I love this truck.

-new rings
-deglazed/honed cylinder walls
-new mls oem head gasket
