Made the ride a bit nicer. One of the shocks had completely failed and the rest were following in its foot steps. Don't mind the one with most of its head cut off it just wanted to meet a Sawzall before it was retired.

I got rid of my garden hose and Gatorade bottle. Having started life as a RHD BJ74, now LHD, I drilled the firewall and popped in the correct grommet and cowl drain hose.

Satisfying.

Happy New Year, y’all.

" So I setup a redirect using the winch so I could pull the tree away from the cabin (and not right on top of the land cruiser)"

Love doing tree work with my 70 series!.....Can't wait to get it back from extensive major surgery/rehab/spa

Just spent five days touring the Bears Ears, The Maze, Barrier Canyon, the San Rafael Desert, and the Swell. The HJ75 mowed through all the off-camber, ruts, rock ledges, and tech wheeling required to get out 60 miles into the backcountry. I'm still getting the hang of the extreme off-camber double track but only had one close to tipping call on a 40º section of trail with a soft shoulder.

Our mates were in their Ranger and I was really impressed with that little pickup. It struggled a bit in a deep crossed up rut but a little pepper got them through. We stuffed the wheels, hitting the bumpstops and never lost contact with the ground. The 3:1:1 t-case gearing and 400ft/lb of torque helped a lot. ;-)

The only mechanical was crushing the tailpipe on a 36" step-down ledge. I made it out to Hanksville, all around the back country and home on one fill up of the main and aux tanks, going 75 at 2450 RPM the whole way on the highways...

I was down in the Swell this past weekend with the Wasatch Cruisers. Would have been fun to bump into you.

Oh damn! Yeah. We spent a majority of our time down off Barrier Canyon but wheeled around there. We saw ZERO people the whole trip. Only cars on the highway and even then, maybe only about 20... Happy New Year!

The current Ford Ranger 4x4 is a far superior truck compared to the 2016-2023 Tacoma 4x4. I am saying this while owning a Tacoma but it is what it is. Not sure about the 2024 Tacoma however.

Too bad the diesel variant isn't available here.

I love that Ranger. Their 2.8L Turbo petrol engine gets 22mpg with their current build. The OZ spec TD engine gets about the same. Petrol is still cheaper than diesel in the US so I think they made the right choice. The biggest Achilles for the Ranger is the small ass gas tank and the lack of long-range tanks... The new 2024 Tacoma is just a smoke-and-mirrors game. Its track width is achieved by just wheel offset, the bonnet/front end is ghastly, the rear seats are cramped, and those suspension seats look like they came off an Expo Jeep build. Toyota USA is just trying to compete with the Dodge lineup. The only modern US spec Toyota that looks appealing at all is the new Prado body (Lexux/LC).

what tires are you running?

They're Falken MT in 255/85R16 last I saw
Correcto!

They're really awesome. The sidewalls aren't as stiff as the BFG MT but that seemed to help out on this trip. We didn't air down at all since it wasn't too sandy and they graded a lot of the roads so corrugation wasn't bad either. So far I've driven over passes in a blizzard and they did great in snow/ice without chains and seem to be super sticky on rocks. Really into them.

interesting I guess I have to check the falcon website again.

A disappointing day today... though more from my son's point of view than mine, however, I am probably feeling almost as bad for my son as he is for himself.

We were headed out to a pool hall for the kids to play some billiards that they wanted to try. My oldest wanted to take his car because he was thinking he might head out with some friends possibly before we were done. I remember being his age and having that freedom and independence is great, so I said sure if that was what he wanted to do.

He was following me and as I came to a stop waiting to turn left into the parking lot, he said he was checking the time on the clock.... sigh...

Poor kid. He wants to fix it, so we will probably be making several trips to the wreckers. I need to order a sticker from parts-souq so I can get a free bumper reflector...

There are some scuffs on the plastic as well... not sure if I will replace these or not

At least everyone was fine, so this is a relatively inexpensive life lesson that could have so easily been much, much worse.
I just realized I left you all hanging on this post.

I managed to find all the parts for my son's car except for the bumper skin, but I was able to repair that enough for it to be safe and attached well.

I also made my son do the majority of the work since it was his mistake, so he will learn.

This was actually completed about a week before Christmas. But I think it turned out fairly well, all things considered. We also fixed it all for under $1000

Sorry for the poor lighting pics

I hadn't realized how much I was enjoying NOT driving all my kids around so when his car was down I was a veritable taxi service.

Nice to have him driving again, and that I didn't need to part out my old car.

s*** happens. Important thing is to learn from it. Mind you, s*** still happens post-learning, just with less frequency. Glad he could get it fixed and a bit of a project out of it.

...rough start with long cranking, chugging once running, stall at signals, hmmm, maybe I have a fuel system problem Houston...
  • fuel filter pressure pump 23301-54140 not holding pressure
  • checked drain found leaking fuel filter, lotsa crud and found square section O-ring
  • find special tool 09228-34010 doesn't remove filter 23303-64010, use special tool - hands
  • note special tool Vise-Grips previously used on level warning switch 23322-64010 and connection broken
  • fuel lines compressed and cracked showing their [probable] 25-year age
Replaced the lot. Starts and runs.

Success, now to find the next thing in need of care...

Today I added some fuel conditioner.
Located my bottle of diesel 911.
Put my spare ext cord aboard, along with spare puffy jacket, blanket.
Changed oil to full synth 5w Rotella.
Ordered a spare fuel filter.

Why? After an unseasonably warm fall/winter, things are about to spiral into a polar vortex. Best be ready...

Completed the 77 Series 1HZ rebuild this weekend! Put about 50 KMS on it. Runs great! Few minor issues to work out but, super pleased and relieved. Big thanks to the brains behind the build... You know who you are.

Took about 10 months. Bunch of that time was waiting on a short block and having full time jobs. That gave me way too much time to order new shiny parts I didn't really need. Lots of smalls replaced while it was apart/in there!

New - Complete 1HZ short block, head, injectors, injector pipes, glow plugs, timing gear case, motor mounts, fuel/water hoses, low-side battery tray, timing belt and bits and a metric sh1t tons of clamps/cushions/hardware!
