I flew up to Montana on Wednesday and on Thursday I left Bozeman and began the drive home to Santa Fe in the new and improved Troopy. The Overland Cruisers Montana team tackled a LOT with this one:

-R2.8 swap
-new f/r 3.7 gears
-front ARB locker
-rebuilt t-case (3:1)
-new T-case output shaft
-bodywork (rust in the runners)
-new clutch, slave cylinder
-new FJ60 heater core
-custom front mount intercooler
-VDJ78 radiator
-custom airbox
-mechanical fan plus custom shroud
-Webasto coolant heater re-install
-blue tooth TDi tuning module
-so.many.brackets.
-dented bumper 😝😘
-re-tensioned e-brake 🤣

The drive home felt like a new car. It’s fast, accelerates off the line, holds 75mph at about 2400rpm, if I keep it around 65-70 I can get 21-22mpg, if I speed up to 75-80, it goes down to 17-19 depending on the wind. I had a really windy day today leaving Fort Collins and the lowest the fuel economy got was 15mpg. It'll go fast but it likes to stick around 65-70 for the best fuel economy. Regardless, way better power than the 12ht.

Overall, I’m so impressed a little 2.8 engine can push a 6000lb brick as it does! The wind all day was so bad I can’t wait for “normal” driving conditions and for the engine to break in more.

Thanks to Stephen and the team at OC for kicking ass and being so pro!

Looks great! Too bad I missed you, would have been fun to meet up while you were in Bozeman.

Awesome John. Congrats on the upgrade man.

Good work Overland Cruiser MT. @JohnnyOshow22

That could be the "newest" model that @Gun Runner 5 was saying did not fit his steering column. Megazip shows the model I posted fitting 1990 up to 2018 models.
I could be wrong, I often am, but I don’t think this newer style would work with my current steering column.

I went to a local dealer this morning to get some extra keys cut for my HZJ77. It turned out for the Ignition and door locks replacement key, I ordered the wrong key blanks which was my fault. It got elevated up to the parts manager when they realized this and explained what happened and they were nice enough to give me credit for the three key blanks and order me the proper ones. Master key doesn't have center groove like the key blanks does. If you don't have the center groove in your master key, it looks like you should order 9099900212 instead.

The superseded lock cylinders will come with slotted keys. Original cylinders use the flat keys.

Great information to know. Thank you sir. It is my first time getting Toyota keys cut so I wasn't aware of all of this.

nothing too crazy this weekend but I installed a factory bumper thanks to @FJ40 that green thing I took the bumper ends off because I was worried the tires would rub. I think I am going to try and strip the paint on the bumper ends and repaint them at some point when I put more narrow tires on my land cruiser. I think the land cruiser looks so much better with the factory bumper over the old aftermarket one. I might put the Japanese plate back on the front. Next thing I gotta do is fix that crooked headlight.

I made the same mistake with factory key blanks a few weeks ago.

Hopefully our posts here will save the headache for others. I am surprised they refunded me for the wrong keys when it was my fault. They didn't even charge for cutting. Not an experience I expected from a dealership I never bought a car from but the parts manager was pretty laid back about it.

The dude probably knows who you work for....;)

Saved me the headache for sure... I've had the wrong P/N in the "to order" list. Thanks for posting!

Lucky I was only out a few dollars. I think I bought the first set (wrong ones) from toyotapartsdeal.net with a big order of other things. I did find the correct oem key blanks or at least ones that could be cut and used after my mistake. I used the local hardware store to cut my keys and they didn't charge me either.

Good to know a hardware store can cut them. It was interesting to watch how they do it at the dealer, it was a big machine of some sort.

Got my driver and passenger area completed. I had my passenger footwell welded and painted in and under.
After a week of curing I put Sound Deadner today. BJ73 interior restore - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/bj73-interior-restore.1269123/post-14279646
I also fabed an insulation from close cell PE foam to replace the recycling cloth material under the flooring.
The flooring will go in only by end of March, though as the truck will first receive body cavity rust prevention applied. Workshop appointment is for March 10. Will post some pics then.
Cheers Ralf

Hello,

Yes, it is good to see it at the dealer. But it turns out it is one of those jobs that a good locksmith (or a hardware store) next door can do, and it turns out to be just as good.
