maybe new d/d??

Hmm... 381 HP 402 Ft/lbs @3600(?) 10.5 rear and 10,800 tow rating (Id suspect take off at least 500 lbs for 4wd) and comparable milage to the other three. Looks like one of the mags pulled 9.2 MPG pulling 7000 lbs... IMHO not to bad for a gasser with LOTS of power. I think the extra cab looks crappy compared to the reg cab or crew cab model though. Also no locker for rear YET this time around. Mebee my first EVER new rig......

Drive one and report back......

Give me the  if you will, but you know I'm right. Toyota is losing their core competency, small well built vehicles that are economical and durable. This tundra is shooting for a different market than the current one. I doubt there will be as much brand loyalty in new tundra owners as there was with the past version. It may be durable, dont know, but it is definately not compact and certainly not economical. I can buy a duramax allison crew for the same price and lets hook em bumper to bumper... yeah, it's a 1/2 ton, who cares what they label it, what matters is what comparable vehicle I can buy for the price.

Anyway, my point is that they took a step in the wrong direction to me. I'm a real likely target for a new vehicle purchase in the next year or so. I'm much more inclined now to find a nice used 06.
The one thing that I can see happening is the resale staying high on the used tundras because there are enough people like me who dont like the new one. Look at the price of used 1st gen tacomas. A low mileage 4door is nearly as expensive as a new 4door. why? Because people liked the smaller tacoma. If we wanted a dakota we would buy a dakota. IMO the new taco is a decent replacement for the tundra crowd, but there is a huge gap left by the phaze out of the smaller pickup. Mr. T really should offer 3 sizes of pickup. Doesn't seem to be an issue having a large stable of suvs that may compete against each other.

Resale

Jetboy,

I was hoping that the resale would stay high on the '06 since I bought one about 7 months ago, but I don't think that is the case. If you Blue Book or NADA an '06 right now you will see that a truck that MSRP'd for $42,000 is only worth about $27,000. In my world that is a huge drop. I am going to have to hold on to my '06 for a while, even if I really like the new Tundra.

Ryan.

What did you actually pay for it new? I'd guess in the $35k range. Anyway if that's the case and then figure in the interest rates for people not buying cash compared to what is available on a used vehicle and I think we'd find that the "value" as put to a monthly payment hasn't changed. I'd guess that a person purchasing a used tundra would pay about equal to your monthly payment.
I understand that it doesn't help you much, but so long as the percieved value of your truck stays high it shouldn't drop much over the next few years. As for the tacomas, if I can buy a new 4door similarly equiped off the lot for 26-28k and a used for like 22k I bet the payment would be higher on the used than the new truck and the used ones seem to move pretty easy off the lots.

You might find that hanging on to your tundra untill the market evaluates the new truck will be beneficial.

You can buy a duramax allison for the same price as what? There is NO pricing out for the tundra yet. The Tundra will be competetively priced as a half ton truck, so if you can buy a duramax allison for the same price as a F150, Silverado 1/4 ton, or Ram 1/4 ton, more power to ya. But why would you buy a duramax, it's "not compact"

EDIT: oops, meant 1/2 ton, not 1/4 ton...

Yes, I'm predict that the pricing on the new tundra will be comparable to pricing for a GM HD2500 allison duramax crew. I'm not talking MSRP; that means essentially nothing. I'm talking cash price that I could walk into a dealer and drive away with the truck. Once pricing is released, I will check on autotrader for comparable new models of each in my zip. and we shall see. It will not be comparable in actual price to any other 1/2ton. It wouldn't make sense, toyota is a premium brand and will comand a premium price. If it were actually priced similarly, Toyota would be leaving a lot of $ on the table.

Why don't I buy a duramax? same reason I wont be buying a new Tundra. I just dont need or want to drive a land tank. If I did I'd buy a 70's cadillac. That's exactly my point. The new tundra is just like the offerings from the big three, and hopefully the quality is superior or they will really have nothing to differentiate themselves. The new Tundra is now more american made than any other full size truck.

The big question for me is...when the hell are they going to make one of these bad boys with a monster diesel in it??? I'll be the first one lined up to buy one when they do. I had a 2004 Dodge Cummins QC and while I loved the engine, I hated the truck and sold it less than a year later...Chevy & Dodge make a great engine, I just can't bring myself to drive the garbage they wrap it in:) and don't even get me started on Fords...

Toyota has been chasing the 1/2 ton sized market (since the T100), I guess it just seems strange that someone would think they would stop now. I don't think they were trying to get a corner on the "mid-size" market, that's just where their previous examples lined up, after all the Domestics "up sized".

Now that Toyota has a real full size truck, perhaps they can un-ruin the Taco by making is 7" narrower again.

Or am I the only guy that snakes old FJs between tight trees while cutting firewood and wheeling? If I wanted a big fat American truck that's hard to fit thru farm gates and such without trimming off mirrors, I'd use my old Chevy for that.

Steve

You're not the only one, there are still some of us out there that like the narrow dimensions of our older trucks. I cringed when the new Taco came out and had increased in size, and I cringed when they announced the Tundra increased in size something like 5" in height, and 4" in width. Don't quote me on these figures I'm sure I'm a little off.

I know the American market is still driving bigger and bigger trucks, but when will they stop? Don't they read the papers? Gas isn't going to get any cheaper.

most vehicles get bigger over time-look at the T-bird. It started as a two seater and ended as a full size sedan.

I too would like to see the hilux reborn.
