Hi guys, been years since I have been on here. My 2000 Land cruiser has about 160K mile on it now and she has been a dream to drive these past 9 years. Today while driving on the highway the check engine light came on, I lost power, then the traction and VSC lights came on, then oil temp. Rolled to the shoulder and had AAA tow me. Mechanic says timing belt failed and quoted me on a new engine around $8K for for the job. They said it has an interference engine, but I am pretty sure it does not? Can you confirm? Timing belt is original. No loud noises or grinding when the event happened, just a burnt rubber smell under the hood. What should I do? Any insight from you guys would be most appreciated! -Jon

Toyota literature said it's an interference motor, but the 98-05 is not, confirmed by a few broken timing belts and no issues on Mud. Verify yourself that it's the belt and maybe consider another shop if they didn't do any further detective work to come to that conclusion.

Like everyone else already said, while technically an interference engine, it's most likely fine.

I mean, 26 years on the original belt, which is a maintenance item, is pretty impressive!
True, we need pics of this belt/peices when it comes out.

Consider getting an inexpensive borescope and check all cylinders including the valves if they got bent.
Or the best way is to remove the cylinder head and inspect the components, it's going to go through a thorough process anyway so might as well.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I am going to talk to the shop today and let them know your input! Crossing my fingers and will keep you posted.

I'll see if I can provide!

quick search finds many threads, I echo the above with a different mechanic if they went straight to engine replacement

Thanks for the link! I like this mechanic but I have yet to speak to the owner. I think the tech that looked at it does not know what the owner knows... we shall see. Owner owns several crusiers, and baselined Vicki when I got her. Independent toyota specialist.
