UZJ100 to UZJ105: SAS build

Assembled the axle today, with the new re-geared 3rd/Harrop locker, AISIN locking hubs and Marks 4wd ABS part-time adapter kit. Plan to put the axle back under the truck next weekend to get the panhard & steering linkage dialed in. Also need to map our new brake & power steering lines. Getting fairly close to the finish line.

Credit to @AJR for a lot of the work & guidance the last few weeks. While this is my truck & my thread, he's leading the way on this build.

On the home stretch...

Unfortunately, the Trail Tailor kit did not come with a panhard reinforcement bar or a bracket to mount it to the frame, so bought some pipe and @AJR had to fabricate a bracket.

Got the axle back under the truck and began mapping out where the power steering and brake lines are going. Still sorting out the steering arm to the steering box.

It's starting to look like a UZJ105. Waiting on the Bora spacers, so could not properly install the wheels. That didn't stop me from throwing my 33's and a 35 @AJR had sitting around the shop under the truck to get an idea of ride height. Still debating 35s vs 37s.

Run the brake lines inside the frame with the abs wiring. I was looking at an 80 frame and the two front bolt on brackets/tombstones looked like they will work. If you drop the brake hose outside the frame and swap to 35"s the tire will hit the brake lines. Ill be moving mine after the relic run. And prob copying the panhard mod from you.

That's what we're thinking with the brakes. We were looking at an 80; driver and passenger ABS lines are routed to the axle via the driver side radius arm. There is a metal protective plate that covers the lines. The passenger side ABS line is routed through a metal tube over the axle to the other side. Doesn't look like routing both of the 100 ABS lines down the driver side is a viable option, so we're going to have to figure out a way to run that line down the passenger radius arm, while also protecting them from potential trial damage.

Unrelated, but I picked up a JDM toy this week from Japanese Classics in Richmond, VA. 1996 KZJ95 with the 1KZ-TE. Since selling my 62, I needed another back-up Cruiser. Loving the diesel and the gas mileage.

Go talk to discount tire if you have one in your area. Depending on the manager of the store, they stand behind their satisfaction guarantee. If you get a cool manager, they will order 2 sets of tires for you (as long as they are in a network warehouse and not a custom order) and will mount them on for you to try and you keep the ones you are satisfied with.

More than likely, you will have to do a bit of cutting for 37’s.

I bought my last set at Discount Tire. I was thinking about doing exactly what you're suggesting. I've had pretty positive dealings with the one close to me. A few of the guys, including the manager, are into off-roading, so I think they enjoy that kind of stuff.

I'm happy with the way that 35 looked in the photo, so I may be leaning that direction for cost and practicality.

I love the 90 series styling for some reason, seeing more of these come up for sale in the states now that they oldest ones are legal. Jealous, but congrats. What kind of mpg are you seeing?

Thanks... Haven't done the calculations yet. I just know it takes me about half the amount of fuel to drive an hour, when compared to the 100. I reset the odometer when I filled up a few days ago, so next time it's on E, I'll have an accurate estimate.

Down to the short list...

Made a lot of progress this weekend. Got the steering shaft and box installed. @AJR welded brake line brackets to the frame and made some custom hard lines. He also fabricated a radiator skid plate out of some c-channel. Next weekend, we finish the brakes and power steering lines.

Also... new meats. 35 12.50 Yokohama Geolander M/T's on 17" Methods. I was leaning towards 37's, but I knew the 35's would be less headache. Very happy with how they turned out.

@Hokie LX good call...

Took the truck on it's first post-op wheeling/overlanding trip this past weekend. The truck ran great and exceeded expectations on the trail. We hit some old logging trails in TN with some gnarly washed out spots. It walked up everything with ease. I finally got to take all the 80 lines for once... I posted a couple of videos on my instagram @UZJ105

I'm taking it to GSMTR in a few weeks for some more rigorous testing. Should have a new Tom Woods front drive shaft and Longfield birfs installed before the trip.

It's been a while since I posted. I had a bad death wobble that caused me to park the truck for a few months. Finally got it dialed in last month and wheeled it at Logan's Run. Such a fun truck.

Took mine out last weekend , grenaded a hub, lost a front caliper (thank god only go going 5mph cause it locked the wheel) and ripped the front sway bar bracket off the frame. I added caster to make mine stable. Now does 80 pretty easily. Are your wheels contacting the spring buckets? Mine are very polished now.
