Under rules being finalized in November, a reporter who met a biologist, wildlife advocate or whistleblower alleging neglect in 36 million acres of wilderness would first need special approval to shoot photos or videos even on an iPhone.

Permits cost up to $1,500, says Forest Service spokesman Larry Chambers, and reporters who don't get a permit could face fines up to $1,000.

First Amendment advocates say the rules ignore press freedoms and are so vague they'd allow the Forest Service to grant permits only to favored reporters shooting videos for positive stories.

So if I don't buy a permit that costs $1500, you may fine me up to $1000? HHHMMM???!!

Either way, it isn't what it appears in the article. it's not like they are requiring a $1500 permit for taking a "selfie" in a National Park.

"45.51a - Permit Requirements

A special use permit is not required for still photography when that activity involves breaking news (sec. 45.5). A special use permit:

1. Is required for all still photography (sec. 45.5) activities on National Forest System (NFS) lands that involve the use of models, sets, or props that are not a part of the natural or cultural resources or administrative facilities of the site where the activity is taking place.
2. May be required for still photography activities not involving models, sets, or props when the Forest Service incurs additional administrative costs as a direct result of the still photography activity, or when the still photography activity takes place at a location where members of the public generally are not allowed."

"45.52a - Permit Requirements
1. A special use permit is required for all commercial filming (sec. 45.5) activities on National Forest System lands (NFS). A special use permit is not required for broadcasting breaking news (sec. 45.5)."

See more referenced at the bottom of the article.

So if you take a picture of your girlfriend (model) in front of your cruiser (prop) in a arranged campground (set) they see entitlement to your money?!?

More usbs policy as I see.

Sure if Hollywood is filming a scene in a normally inaccessible location but otherwise ...pfffft

I see it fair to saying if its a professional shootstanding the chance to make profit off the photo and still it should be describable that the location added to market value. As in if no one cares the location that is simply background and subject is primary focus that would be weak grounds for requiring permit.

However an individual taking photos for his own use and collection. C'mon. I mean I know I have no place to rely on common sense in politics but seriously?

However it's sad and true. A friend of mine was threatened a sizeable fine for taking a photo of a bald eagle nest because according to officer to be within photo range is to be within range of disturbance. :/

Went into rei and was basically harassed out of the store. Can't look for employees wanting to help you.

On another note does anyone here have experience with roku streaming players? Current smart dvd player sucks in the bedroom.

I have had a Roku for about 3 years, specifically to stream Netflix/Amazon Prime Movies. Easy setup and you can download the app on your phone to use for a remote or search functions - since the on screen menu and typing (for search function) sucks balls with the OEM remote.

I also have a Roku. The wife researched and bought us a 1st Gen Roku and we bought a later gen when the first one went tits up. We love it and use it daily. We don't have cable so we just stream Hulu and Netflix - it works well for us.

Yeah we are netflix only. Going to get amazon soon as well. Specific ones do hd as well right?

Get the cheap one if all you do is Netflix. The most expensive one gives you a USB port and SD slot and fancy remote for games - all things I can live without.

Anyone want to play Fantasy NBA? I just stared a league and need a few more teams to join.

I have never busted my a$$ so hard in my life just to fail a test. Current grade average in class is 80.90 with a 7 point scale. I have one last test and then the exam to go. I am so dead!:bang:
