Finally have something to share in this thread. I got around to finishing up my 4X4 Lab bumper build by putting together the rear spare tire/hi-lift mount and cage for 4 NATO cans or ARB fridge/freezer. I moved the plate to under the cage with a new LED light to keep myself legal.

I still have to pull off the whole bumper to weld the spindle ends to the bottom of the bumper, sand/prime/paint the whole thing one more time to be done with it. That is this weekend's project, at least I've got it functional to this point...

Very nice! Looks like it fits very close to your upper gate. 4 Nato cans - gonna have to get some heavy duty springs! Love those tires!

Ever get the wiring done on the swing out?

Doubt I'll ever have 4 filled cans, I'm sure the ARB fridge will occupy the space mostly. Yes, with the "lightweight" spare tire and a loaded fridge, towing the exped trailer, a set of airbags are planned when I do the axle swap in the coming month(s)...

Yup, thanks for your help that Sat, did get it wired and functional...

Disassembled the hardtop today to evaluate some damage done when I used a strap in the wrong place while trailering. She's never been torn down to this level and I found out it's a good thing I did... the dreaded rust was worse than anticipated - ugh:

Rain gutter "ripped" due to trying use a strap in the wrong place and too much wind force:

Rust on side panels where they meet the header :( :

Driver side not as bad, but will require metal work too:

Ahhhh, vintage Toyota rust........................

Non-toyota wrenching is painful...

Had to give my daily driver some long overdue love, been loosing coolant consistently for a while. Finally had to take action after a couple overheating situations.

Also joined the recently popular "valve cover gasket club" since I had half the car disassembled while trying to replace my coolant flange and temp sensor. The engineers must have been evil and tiny, they crammed some much stuff in there... Luckily for me the coolant flange is at the very back of the block rammed up against the firewall, and buried below all kinds of vaccuum/oil hoses....

I deeply missed the spacious engine bay of my 40.... My hands took a serious beating as did my lower back

Hopefully this thing will start in the morning and be free from coolant and oil leaks for a while.

Bingo, good eye! 1.8T. Was very pleased that I didn't see signed of the dreaded sludge that plagues these engines.

The synthetic oil still looks pretty clean in there but it's amazing how smelly it is inside the engine.

I'm only at 95k miles but it's 12 yrs old so all the plastic and rubber bits are getting brittle.

Nice :D Interesting to see how the intake is different since yours is longitudally mounted.

Audi?

Correct again, it's an a4. Really fun car to drive, grips the road really well, but the audi markup on simple parts really annoys me. The mrs used to have a manual Jetta which opened my eyes to how fun a well engineered 4 cylinder can be.

Could not agree more about the 1.8T, an extremely well engineered motor. I've got to chase down a vacuum leak and then she's back to 100% again.
