That's a neutral safety switch IIRC...

This little guy, Eh? Hmmm...

I try that each time. No difference.

If no difference, then it's not the neutral switch, it could be a bad connection or the alarm relay or starter or contacts (most likely).

@Tools R Us why do you ask if it starts in neutral? I ask because I tried this & it started right up. I'm about to purchase a starter, but not sure it's really the starter. It seems like a senser or something... when she starts it a good quick start, everything sounds & feels like it should.

The neutral switch has two switches related to starting in it, one for park (gets the most wear) and one for neutral. If it fails in park, but starts every time in neutral, that is an indicator of neutral safety switch problems. Could be a bad switch or connection or linkage/switch adjustment.

Those are pretty durable, most often it's something else. Like some one jacked up the system by putting in a body lift and didn't properly adjusting the shift linkage, so it doesn't go fully into park.

Tools, your on it like allways... that is exactly it. I put a 1" body lift in & have to very slight push forward on the shifter to get the key out. Need help, how do adjust this or is it to late?

I'm such a  .
:bang::bang::bang:
Thank you @Tools R Us I just got home. It literally took 5 minutes to adjust the likage. Here are some pics... hope this helps the next guy who does a body lift.

Don't you just love it when you are panicking and someone like Tools comes along to let you know how silly you are. Been there a thousand times.

And I mean this with the utmost respect for the guys like Tools that know all of this s*** and are willing to share their wealth of knowledge with the rest of us.

I so agree. I couldn't say it any better. Tools just saved me several hundred dollars....

I can remember at least 8 "RTH: I can't..." threads I've started in a fit of panic that I'm the first one to comment on with "Nevermind, I'm an idiot. I figured it out." And probably a dozen more where I panicked and someone like Tools or Jon Held or Summit Cruisers pointed out a 5 min fix and I was on my way.

If only there was a way to catalog all of that information. With a search function. A website or forum or something.

It's good to get satisfaction from fiddling with a nut!?:hillbilly: Hope that was all of the problem.

No it wasn't, it cooled off, I tried to start it to go to New Year deal & no start in P or N.
What ever...:hmm: :meh:
Happy New Year folks.
We'll get it next year.
Thanks Tools for all you do here on mud.

It's a New Year. Did you figure it out yet?

Like I said, do yourself a favor and install a jumper wire for easy testing ;)

I had the same problem and new contacts worked temporarily

Then I replaced it with a new OEM unit and that also worked temporarily

After testing with a jumper, I found that the ignition switch would randomly throw either low or no voltage

I was ALWAYS able to start using the jumper wire itself, so I installed a push button on a timer relay circuit and have yet to get a false start ever since

I took the starter out & cleaned up the not so bad contacts.

I'm moments away from installing it back in the Lx.... As far as jumper wire I'm no 100% sure what you are saying.
Do I need to directly put a wire to here?

Yes, splice a jumper wire onto the remote wire that plugs into that connector (I used a heat shrink butt splice like this)

Run the jumper wire up to the battery, but don't connect it (I keep mine coiled up at the relay box with a rubber cap on the end)

The next time you have an issue with starting, check the output of the jumper lead with volt meter.

If the voltage is low or none at all, you know the problem lies in the starting circuit (either the ignition switch or P/N safety switch)

Best of all, you'll be able to bypass them both by touching it to the positive terminal on the battery to get you started

I carry a BAW (big ass wrench) with me in both my LC and my Subi Outback. Couple smacks to the the starter when it is starting to fail should get it working again....not a perm fix though. Eventually it will leave you stranded. Hope you got your starter issues resolved! If not...my votes for a new one.

Cheers

CS

I just got it back in & it started right up...
That really doesn't mean much..
Thanks for the help, I will start tracking back to the ignition switch for good voltage.
I really don't like splicing into a perfectly good wire for a bypass jumper, but it is good to know if things get desperate.
Thanks all.
I will post back for historical purpose.

Debating whether to just put in a new starter or do the rebuild parts.
Will decide after a flight back to the states in two weeks (where ordering parts is way easier).
This forum is so awesome. Thanks for all the replies and suggestions!

Posi-Tap- No Crimp Tap

Are real nice for tapping into an existing wire. Small pin prick where the tap is made, easy to dab a little liquid tape over if you ever want to remove the tap.

cheers,
george.

I had the same issue with intermittent starting. Looked at starter and ignition, ended up being a slightly loose negative battery connection. YMMV
