overdrive--
i doubt the MTR's are louder than swampers, but i havent run them on anything ive owned. I have kept the goodyears rotated and the wear appears even, but only one shows some chunking and that i blame on getting wedged in the slot on kodak down at URE.

mongo- what size are you lookin to go for? tall and skinnys still or a standard flotation series?

For right now, 33's, in a year or so with more of a 4" lift maybe some 35's or 37's.

Im sure there will be plenty who disagree, Toyo open country AT is the best all terrain tire made.

Aren't you thinking about selling your 60? If it were me, I'd put the BFg's on the 40, and find you a cheaper set of semi-agressive no-name tires for the 60 and sell it. This way, you should be out minimal cash for tires, can try the AT's on the 40, and when you lift it, you won't be so bummed with having to buy new tires again...

Again, just my 2 shiny copper thingies...

As a side note we have Sidewinder AT's (a BFG AT knock off) on the wifes 4Runner and we have over 50K miles on them. They are just now starting to get loud. I have a set of BFG AT's going on next as I picked them up a few years ago to go on the cruiser and never used them.

MTR's are lound once they wear. I have heard really random wear stuff out of them too. SOme poepl say they wear like steel, take forever to wear out. Others say they wear out a little slower than swampers. I think it may depend on the vehicle as well, but not sure.

lets revive an old DEAD thread.....

I am looking for tires for my 80, (285/75/16) in an AT tread pattern. I have pretty much narrowed it down to the Cooper Discover AT/3 or a Nitto tire (not sure which one), unless someone here has some ground breaking information... I have always leaned towards BFG, but reading reviews on all varieties of the BFG and Goodyear and a few other brands have pushed me towards the two mentioned above... anyone have any input?

I can get the Cooper mounted and balanced for $1120 locally for 5. Nittos should be about the same.

Look at Nexan Roadans, this is what I run on the 60 and they are great, they have a high weight rating so they handle the weight of the cruiser really well. I got them from Jessie's tire up here in liberty. My buddy has them on his Beamer and get the same performance.

BFG A/Ts will give you 50-60,000 miles and great on and off road performance...I can't see going wrong with them. I'm not a great fan of the Nitto's, and they will wear lots (30,000 mi)quicker.

I was looking at a set for my 62 because of price, but the Raffle got in the way of that.
I was looking at about $800.00 shipped to my door for 33's, I can mount and balance them where I used to work.

This isn't my experience, I've had my Nitto TGs on my 100 for over 50000 miles and they still look and ride fine. Easily have another 10K on them. In fact, I like them so much I put a set of Nitto street tires on my car. Surprisingly, just from switching tires, I now get 80+ more miles out of a tank of gas.

I recently had to put some new shoes and the 62 and Marshall gave a thumbs up on the Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S. He runs them on his 80 and so far, I have been impressed with them. Big improvement from the worn out BFG A/Ts that were on there.

I need new tires for the 80 and having a heckuva time finding what I want...I currently have a 35x13.50x16 and apparently that size became a dinosaur at some point...

I say Duratracs base on my experience with a lot of tires. I have owned swampers (non-radial), swamper IROKs, BFG MTs, BFG ATs, Kumho, Goodyear street tires, Michelin street tires, Duratracs, and a few other odds and ends (Cooper Discovery, etc).

The Duratracs are BY FAR the best tire I have ever owned. They work and wear well on the street, have aggressive tread for off road (perform better than some MTs I have owned) and have held up to the wear and tear of using them 100% of the time.

NITTO was never on my list because of the inconsistencies I have seen in others. Some get a great set that last a long time and have no issues. Some have sidewall failures offroad really fast. Some see cupping and premature wear. I am sure they have improved over time but I think they have had a rocky road.

I have never heard of anyone having issues with Duratracs or not loving them. They change the ride feel, better control on road, awesome snow and rain performance, and they still get it done on the trail.

I had the Duratracs on the 80 and liked them alot no doubt they are a great compromise between on road and offroad duty. Definetly the best MT I have ever had hands down in the snow/ice. But having said that I switched to KM2s about a year ago and like them better than the Duratracs.

The KM2s are supringly quiet and are a softer compound which I perfer offroad, the duratracs were a very "hard" tire which I guess helps in their longevity but I didn't care for.

But the feature I like the most abut the KM2s is I can get them in 255/85/16 ....tall skinnies are the only way to go :D gained about 2mpg on the highway over my 285/75/16 Duratracs

My complaint about BFG MT KM1 or KM2 is that you better stay on top of rotation and balancing them or they will wear funny. I've owned at least 3 sets of KM1s and 255/85/16 KM2s on the 4runner now. I have heard nothing but good things out of Coopers. I ran the Toyo AT's for a short period just before we sold the 4runner listed above when this thread died in 2007. They seemed to ride nice as well. As many of you know I usually just get whatever I can find for a good price.

That being said, next set I buy will be more street oriented as I do not wheel enough to justify an aggressive tire.

I run KM2s now and they are wearing pretty darn well but they are MTs so of course won't wear as well as a less aggressive tire.

I have run numerous sets of BFG all terrains. Have gotten over 60K on every one. We had Cooper discovery sst's on our Jeep unlimited and got about 50K out of them. They were pretty good but loud.

I am running KM1's on the 40. Great off road and dont drive enough on road to worry too much about them being loud.

SO I have been reading and re reading and re re reading Tirerack reviews and other forums...

I have talked to customers in my restaurant that like the Bridgestone Duellers
On other 4wd sites guys like the Toyo, Hankook Dynapro AT, Yokahama, firestone, Kumho, and of course BFG.... then there is treadwright retreads for about $300 less (for 5) than the Cooper At/3 locally installed.

For every great review there is someone stating they only got 10k miles out of a set perfectly rotated etc..

There have been remarks from guys that own and others that work in tire stores: they all run toyo, another guy said Cooper has the best warranty, michelin's warranty is horrible for the dealer.

I was leaning to testing the retreads on the 40, but they only go to 31" and that is too small.

I think I am going to hit a set of Cooper At/3 in 285/75/16 for the 80 and see how it goes, buy local and trust this guy since he runs them on his truck.. and claims because he is a Medallion dealer if there are ANY problems Cooper will take care of the problem ASAP and painlessly....these are a little more aggressive than I really need right now as I am moving in 3-4 months and won't be living on a dirt/gravel road anymore. Maybe I could find some 16" steel wheels for the 40 and run them if I don't love them or determine I need more of a highway tire.

The Toyo looks pretty good with a 65k mile warranty, the Cooper has a 60k mile warranty...

Bob look at Nexan roadians....I have the ATII which are a basic tire with a somewhat aggressive tread, but what I love about them is one the price and two they have an outstanding weight classification, I'll have to look tomorrow and see what mine is rated, but I've had them for about two years now and they look like they were just put on yesterday. Very nice ride and hold up very well, I just priced a set for the wife's 4runner, 430.00 out the door. I do believe they have an off road tire but I'm sure u can look on there website. if you're willing to come up to Liberty, which is 10 min outside Clemson, Jessie's tire is where I get my tires from. I'll try and take some pics tomorrow Bob.
