Three speed to four

Hi all newbie here. I'm looking to swap a three on the tree (71') to four on the floor (72); any suggestions? Thanks

'72 would have been 3 on the floor IIRC. 4 speed was standard starting with the '74 model year. That swap has been done many times. Not a ton of detail but post #4 makes it sound pretty easy. Of course that's often the case with the internet.

Hi everyone--I'm new and have a few questions--got a 69 FJ55--lots of issues (and still not running) but want to know your thoughts. Do a lot of folks change the column shifter to the floor on these 3 speeds. Difficult? When I get it going I want to make a change from this wobbler to something that will not fall out on me. Not changing to a 4 speed just going to stay with the 3 speed tranny--many thanks for your thoughts--

Thread '3sp flywheel with 4sp trans'

Ok so I know one needs the 4sp bell housing to swap a 4 for a 3, but what about the flywheel? Can I retain my 3sp fw and pp?

I think Mr T mixed and matched parts when the transition to 4=spd occurred.

My '74 came w/ 4-spd, but the t-case had the 3-spd gearing in it and she had a 3-spd clutch (not good).
