This all started 3 years ago with wanting a cheap 4 wheel drive anything to go fishing with. I may have gotten a little carried away with her. One of the benefits of working at a large car dealership is getting your own cars professionally photographed.

Beautiful cruiser! I found out the hard way that those plastic bolt heads on the ATX wheels chip/fade over time. If you experience the same, you can zip them all off with a 15mm impact. Makes for a clean look, and the plastic rivets come right out.

Pioneer AVH-4200NEX. It's been replaced by the 4201 now but it's prob pretty much the same. But yeah, from a navigation standpoint, CarPlay is the best system I've used in any car ever. You just tell Siri where you want to go and you're done. It made it impossible to not rip out my wife's entire nav and stereo system out of her Yukon after I had to use it and just cussed the people who designed it. And in the scheme of car navigation systems her wasn't even that bad, but it was prob designed around 2011-12 and is just from a different era than a phone whose software is updated constantly.

No head unit really puts out real power so I paired it with a JL 900/5 that I put under the passenger seat. It's about all that 80 amp alternator can handle and even this little amp's musical peaks dimmed the lights noticibly before I did the HID retrofit. Anything bigger prob would require an aftermarket alternator.

I thought that was the point of capacitors in series: to handle the peaks and prevent dimming.

Not too shabby for a 14 year old vehicle.

Went for a cruise last Monday.

I can't tell if you did a custom paint job on this vehicle or if you photoshopped your picture to make it look like that. If you did a custom paint job, what brand & colors did you use? Your vehicle looks amazing.

This is the super faded Smoky Topaz Mica look! lol But seriously, no custom paint or photoshopped. My paint is faded throughout so it lighter than a normal Smoky Topaz Mica. I've heard this was an issue and originals owners had the option to get it repainted free of cost. The original owner of this LX did not take advantage of this...as you can see! =)

Had another detail day with @PaulLx470, just in time for the 3 inches of snow we are going to get tomorrow and rain on Saturday...

Did a full claybar, buff, and wax on his 200 to rid it of the swirl marks and battle scars from the fender flares he pulled off last month, hehe, I think it came out pretty good :p ;). On a side note, I'm probably not going to continue buying Lake Country buffing pads, as the one I had failed halfway through (the velcro backing fell off, and the second one I started using did the same thing, both were new).

I also put a coat of wax on Elsie for the heck of it.

And here's something we thought we would never see, two Land Cruisers and a tuned Taurus SHO (Paul's lady friend's car).

I think the real issue is that both stiffening capacitors and HIDs that run off a power supply so as not to dim, just mask the problem. The once 80 amp alternator in this 20 year old car is woefully inadequate if you start putting in aftermarket stereo equipment. I've just read a lot of horror stories about the reliability of many of the 150+ amp aftermarket choices, so I'll ride the stock unit until it dies. I don't really listen to it at levels that tax it too bad often. But man, before the HIDs it's a wonder I didn't get pulled over at night.

landylover21, which lake country pads were you using that failed?

We still have hundreds of the older flat foam pads by LC at my shop because we are not a fan of the newer ones (different foam material). Don't know what we will do when the old ones will wear out beyond the point of being re-used. Their purple foam wool pads are still pretty good and one of my favorites for cutting, but those have the backing come off as well after several cars and several washes.

The CCS pads... It might have something to do with the DA I was using yesterday as it wasn't my trusty Porter Cable (RIP) but one from Harbor Freight which does a decent job for what it is.

I have their Waffle Weave pads as well but haven't used them with this DA.

What can I say, once I get on a roll, I get on a roll :-P hahaha

Logged in here for the first time in years today after I saw the group buy discussion on LR fuel tanks. Made me feel like a loser that I contribute nothing to this great board, so here you go. (I got 3 kids under three, so the running boards stay, for now.)

1998
140k mi
Gold package removed
Gray body panel body matched
Old Man Emu 2.5 lift and diff drop
2005+ 18" wheels
Spacers
325/65 Duratracs
Quad Bi-Xenon retrofit(YAAAAssss)
05-07 grille upgrade
LED interior and lic plate
Doug Thorley Cat-Back exhaust

And bunch of car audio stuff you guys might not care about but I will say Apple CarPlay brings it right up to date electronics/navigation wise. I'm so glad that I got stuck in the snow that one time years ago and decided to not have it happen again. I just didn't realize that the car I bought for 10k as a snow truck would make me sell my "real car" and start treating this like it's my mistress er something. I love this thing.

You didn't need to get the upper control arms? I was looking at the kits and didn't know which one to buy. Also no issues with gears with the 35s?

Nice truck

In a stroke of luck, I called some guy named Slee (lol) not knowing my butt from a hole in the ground when I bought the truck in 2011. He said 35s were possible as long as you're not trying to get full articulation with no rubbing(rock crawling). He told me not to over spring it andwhich spacers I needed and the setup was dead on right. A little wheel well plastic trimming and now I have no rubbing lock to lock. It's mission is to get me where I need to go in heavy snow, and it's perfect for that. It'll rub ever so slightly with the wheels turned if you get them compressed enough. It's just so slight that I haven't done anything about it. I'd think that a move away from 325s would completely eliminate it.

As far as power goes, it's good enough. Ten years ago I would've said it's unbearably slow, but kids have mellowed my need to arrive at my destination as fast as possible. For regular driving it's fine, you just have to give it the stick more than a modern car. I'm getting DT headers on here in a week or so so we'll see if that helps much. Bottom line on it is that it's adaquate and not really that bad.

So, no upper control arms and no re gear. I'd call and talk to Slee. I mean there was no hesitation, he knew exactly what would work/fit. His suspension recommendation was dead on as well. The truck drives like a euro SUV, which is crazy since the COG is so high.

Sometimes I like to step outside, look at her, and smile
When it dries up a bit - hopefully tomorrow - I'm going to give my headlights an admittedly modest, aesthetic, upgrade with these Osram cool blues (per Osram, HB4s for the low beams and fogs, HB3s for the high beams, and W5Ws for the parking lights).

^^^ Those JK are tiny inside. And the ride quality..... yeah let's not even talk about that.
