You're on a land cruiser forum. Do you really need someone to spell out the benefits of full time 4WD and lockers?Still nothing that tells me they wont be IDENTICAL underneath????
Didn't you hear, A-trac made lockers obsolete years ago. You're on a land cruiser forum. Do you really need someone to spell out the benefits of full time 4WD and lockers?
FRONT lockers and there is some logic to it but I still went with air lockers.Didn't you hear, A-trac made lockers obsolete years ago.
The giant metal protrusions and rubber bump stops mounted to those protrusions on the frame of the Land Cruiser… those don’t exist in the 4Runner.Still nothing that tells me they wont be IDENTICAL underneath????
Fine but on the flip side, TNGA has no magical power (good or bad) to bestow on any vehicle no matter how many times it’s touted as a godsend.Ok, I’ll bite. It’s too soon to tell whether or not the 250 (or the 6G 4R for that matter) will attain that special status of their predecessors. I consider 150’s special and yes, the 5th Gen 4Runner has turned out to be a pretty special vehicle as well.
That being said even the full size LC’s are not as invincible as some on this forum would have you believe. By the logic that started this thread the 300 must not be all that special either because it’s also built on GA-F architecture and has had a host of issues since release (injectors, turbos, etc)
The 6th gen 4R isn’t out yet. So too soon. The giant metal protrusions and rubber bump stops mounted to those protrusions on the frame of the Land Cruiser… those don’t exist in the 4Runner.
Well the prototype that people are driving doesn’t have it, neither do the production Tacomas. The 6th gen 4R isn’t out yet. So too soon.
Probably style mixed with prep/strategy for the structural small overlap rigid barrier tests coming into play.GX looks more like a 5th gen 4Runner than the 6th gen 4Runner does. It's just a C pillar treatment away.

The red part is the WTF were they thinking issue for me. That's about 35% of the vehicle length.

There's a few differences in powertrain. 4Runner higher spec models get the 9.5" rear axle where the LC only comes with 8.2" one. Most 4R also have the 8.2. And the 4R limited and Capstone trims come with awd transfer case - same as the LC. I think the last 4R without a center differential option was the 2nd gen. The 3rd gen added it in some trims in about MY 2000ish. I think the LC is the only config that comes with a rear locker and awd, but its not known yet if you can add any options on those models to add a rear locker.AFAIK the only substantial mechanical difference is that the LC has a transfer case with a differential (making it AWD like previous generation LC's) and the T4R does not (maybe the higher trim levels will making them pretty much identical).
Is there any significance to the 8.2” vs the 9.5” rear axle? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a rear axle breaking and I can’t imagine Toyota skimped out on the LC250.There's a few differences in powertrain. 4Runner higher spec models get the 9.5" rear axle where the LC only comes with 8.2" one. Pricing is going to be interesting. Will the Capstone 4R price above the Land Cruiser trim? I think so. Probably so will the TRD Pro and TrailHunter assuming a $5-8k jump over the Taco pricing.
The old 8" rear axles broke all the time once you started modifying and putting on larger tires. The 8.2 in the 150 was fine... with <300ft lbs, with >400? Maybe, depending on much they have de-tuned torque output at low speeds. Is there any significance to the 8.2” vs the 9.5” rear axle? Underneath the 250 and new 4Runner will be identical……so what makes it special other than the name?
Bingo.“Special” is very subjective as it could mean many things to different people.
From my perspective the difference is no longer that big. Pick the individual features you want or are important to you. I choose a LandCruiser premium.
And to add to the earlier comment from Onur @OGBeno , I’ll agree the 70 is the last real LandCruiser globally and that the last real LC on NA soil was the 80-series. Now the haters can really hate.
