Still nothing that tells me they wont be IDENTICAL underneath????

I hope my 250 has as many issues as the average 5th Gen 4Runner, instead of the 100k mile money pit that the 200 was.

As for what makes it special vs 6th Gen? Not much other than design aimed toward a more mature audience. I'm quite happy with that, but to each their own. There will always be naysayers from the peanut gallery.

Cheers to many miles and smiles in whatever your vehicle of choice.

You're on a land cruiser forum. Do you really need someone to spell out the benefits of full time 4WD and lockers?
Didn't you hear, A-trac made lockers obsolete years ago.

Ok, I’ll bite. It’s too soon to tell whether or not the 250 (or the 6G 4R for that matter) will attain that special status of their predecessors. I consider 150’s special and yes, the 5th Gen 4Runner has turned out to be a pretty special vehicle as well.

That being said even the full size LC’s are not as invincible as some on this forum would have you believe. By the logic that started this thread the 300 must not be all that special either because it’s also built on GA-F architecture and has had a host of issues since release (injectors, turbos, etc)

Fine but on the flip side, TNGA has no magical power (good or bad) to bestow on any vehicle no matter how many times it’s touted as a godsend.

The giant metal protrusions and rubber bump stops mounted to those protrusions on the frame of the Land Cruiser… those don’t exist in the 4Runner.
The 6th gen 4R isn’t out yet. So too soon.

AFAIK the only substantial mechanical difference is that the LC has a transfer case with a differential (making it AWD like previous generation LC's) and the T4R does not (maybe the higher trim levels will making them pretty much identical).

There's a few differences in powertrain. 4Runner higher spec models get the 9.5" rear axle where the LC only comes with 8.2" one. Most 4R also have the 8.2. And the 4R limited and Capstone trims come with awd transfer case - same as the LC. I think the last 4R without a center differential option was the 2nd gen. The 3rd gen added it in some trims in about MY 2000ish. I think the LC is the only config that comes with a rear locker and awd, but its not known yet if you can add any options on those models to add a rear locker.

Pricing is going to be interesting. Will the Capstone 4R price above the Land Cruiser trim? I think so. Probably so will the TRD Pro and TrailHunter assuming a $5-8k jump over the Taco pricing.

I always thought / assumed that the 4R would be less expensive in order to justify itself on the showroom floor. If it's the same or more expensive is there really a reason for it?

I'm not sure what the reason is to have 4 different models of the same vehicle. I think the LC300 or the LC250 alone with a full trim range could replace all of them.

My guess on price is based on the Taco. The TRD Pro is around $65k. Add another $5-8k for the SUV version and you're around $70-72k. No one really knows what the capstone will be since it's new. But I'd expect it to be above the TRD Pro/TrailHunter trims. Probably $73k(?) The Land Cruiser trim LC250 is $68. So it seems pretty likely to me that the 4R will end up overlapping on both ends of the LC250 range.

Street price though? That's a different question I think. The LC250 is starting around invoice price in the real world. $54-55k for the base and $58ish for the square lights trim. I think the 4R will start about $40-45k for a 4x4 and top about $60k for a capstone in real world sales prices. I don't think customers will pay much beyond $60 for the 4R in any trim level unless the capstone has some unusual magic we don't know about. The GX starts around $65, so I just cant see pushing much past $60 on the 4R in real sale prices.

Is there any significance to the 8.2” vs the 9.5” rear axle? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a rear axle breaking and I can’t imagine Toyota skimped out on the LC250.

The old 8" rear axles broke all the time once you started modifying and putting on larger tires. The 8.2 in the 150 was fine... with <300ft lbs, with >400? Maybe, depending on much they have de-tuned torque output at low speeds.

GX550 has 9.5, LC250 has 8.2. I would say they skimped on the LC250 in this, and numerous other areas.

Underneath the 250 and new 4Runner will be identical……so what makes it special other than the name?

“Special” is very subjective as it could mean many things to different people.

From my perspective the difference is no longer that big. Pick the individual features you want or are important to you. I chose a LandCruiser premium.

And to add to the earlier comment from Onur @OGBeno , I’ll agree the 70 is the last real LandCruiser globally and that the last real LC on NA soil was the 80-series. Now the haters can really hate.
