Doug, was wondering how you ran your exhaust? If you get time could you post some pictures of the exhaust. Also, I read that you have two fuel tanks. How did you do this and what is the process? Will be looking for another motor tomorrow.

My exhaust runs about the same as the stock 2f does. I have a flowmanster 50 (I think a 50?) turned on it's side to clear my saddle tank. The tail pipe exits just behind the rear of drivers tire mudflap. If you look at the first picture showing the tank, you can see the muffler on edge near the spring perch.
Mt second tank is an 19 gallon saddle tank from Australia. I found 2 and sold the other one a long time ago. These tanks work well and you can keep your spare tire in the stock location too.
Another nice feature is you have 2 separate tanks just in case???
I modified the stock fill pipe below the cap with another pipe welded into near the top. I stick the fuel nozzle straight in to fill the stock tank and angle to the rear and into the new pipe to fill the saddle tank.
Both tanks have their supply and return lines plumbed to manual fuel valves I mounted in front of the drivers seat. Just switch to change tanks.
The saddle tank has a sending unit for a gauge, but I never hooked it up. I'm pretty good at estimating my mileage and can switch tanks quickly if she sputters! If she dies and won't start again, the IP has a hand primer as does the Racor fuel filter. Only takes a minute to fire her back up.

What size starting battery do you use to start the 4BD? What is the starting current?
The 4BD1T manual says two batteries in parallel for a total of 1160 amps (12V)....I don't recall you mentioning running two slutting batteries.

Seriously though, you only need one good battery to start these things. I have twin optima blue tops and only use one for starting and it has always fired right up.

Is it possible to mate the 4bd motor to a standard 5 speed out of a Tacoma or like transmission? Looked around for the H55 and holy crap, what a price tag. Just wondering what else would work for us cheap guys on a tight budget.
The torsional vibrations are rough on transmissions behind these engines. I wouldn't put a small transmission behind one of these engines. IMO the H55 is just adequate. Automatic's torque converters will cushion the torque pulses. NV4500's are pretty beefy.

That is funny and yes, why is that on your auto correct? My blue tops are D34M size and they are rated at 750 cold cranking amps at 0 degrees and 870 amps at 32 degrees. I haven't been hearing very many good things about optimas since they moved production to Mexico though. For my FJ40 I am currently building I went with a single larger Odyssey that is rated at 880 CCA.

I would consider the H55 the minumum and if I was to do it again with a manual tranny, my only choice would be the NV4500 because of the overdrive ratio and the beefier design. Or go with an auto. 69Rambler is now building adapters for Land Cruiser autos to mate to these Isuzu engines.

RHINO has been running an r150 and toybox behind his for years in a pig. FWIW... You might check out his conversion thread.
Would an Allison 4spd trans work with this motor? Found one for a good price. Dont know much about these transmissions. Any info or suggestions would be great.

Sorry for being late to the party, but have been on vacation for a couple of weeks. The ToyUzu worked great up in the Sierra's near Bridgeport, but puff's some black smoke and is down on power above 8,000 feet! Can you believe that? LOL
Batteries, I run two batteries in my swap. They are DuraLast Golds, group 24's in parallel and rated at 750/935 CCA. This set up spins the engine fast for quick starts and the GP's seem nice and hot.
I have had good luck with these batteries. One was weak after about 18 months and I explained my install and how both batteries should be changed out, and they exchanged both both for free!

Where would a person find a h55f for this conversion? Found a motor just need a trans. Not sure about the h55, an allison 4 spd, or an nv4500. Which is the better choice? Looked at AA for mating the engine and trans, pretty pricy no matter which way you go. Really need to get this thing running and back on the road. Thanks for the input and help.

I had the H55 already in my 60 and used it, but many have used the NV4500 and it appears to be better and cheaper option.
As for the adapter, look for a Downey Chevota set up here on Mud. I found one for $150 and used a Chevota V8 clutch kit. Quick, easy and cheap.

Well just made my purchase of a 4BD1t motor, it runs and got it for $1200. Now the fun begins. One question, can you put a straight shift on a diesel engine that was originaly automatic? Is a H55 for $1000 a good price? Can't wait to get started on this project. Thanks for all of the imput Doug.
I ended up getting a Sears 31M. It's way overkill but the truck started right up.

Yes I don't believe there is any difference in the motor when used for AT vs. Manual. You will need to source a flywheel, which is hard to come by. Check out 4btswaps.com forum and look in the Isuzu section.
