Rare(? - almost all '90s era Hilux 4WDs I've seen for sale have been double or regular cabs, usually the former) Xcab '98 Hilux w/5L diesel. Imported last year.

And yes, the monster canopy came with it at no extra cost - I do actually have a use for a canopy of that size (hauling a dirt bike or ATV out of sight). Picked it up last week in Montana and drove it home. I had to tie down the canopy because the clamps wouldn't hold it down at freeway speeds.

My first chore is to get the canopy off for now, then sell my US config pickup to fund mods for the Hilux (first new suspension - the shocks are worn out, then either a turbo or locking diffs - not sure which one first). Lot's of cobbled wiring for gauges, lights, cams, etc - I will tear most of that out.

Body is mostly in good shape (one smallish dent on passenger rear bed corner, and clear coat faded/worn on hood and top of cab), no rust underneath.

This is your 167? Is there a name for these style of beds? I figured they were only available as late as like 91 or so
Yes. Several names those beds have. I’m actually not sure 100% what Toyota calls them but it’s seems like are referred to as “J" deck, and the Smooth side is the "A" deck (also commonly call sr5 beds).

I call them j hook beds or hook tub.
I’ve heard rolled bed, safari bed, and it seem like in Spanish speaking countries they call it a “Rancho bed”

5L engine?
How did the turbo work for you?
its the 3L, but the turbo is a ct20 setup was a take off from a 2lte. Works great. Once im done with a current project im probably going to change it up. Just clean everything up a bit. Ill take some pics when i get a chance and send em to you if youd like.

Yes - pics would be nice.

I read somewhere that there were better turbos for these engines than the ct20 though. I would not do the conversion myself (I am getting too old to do non-trivial work on my vehicles), so I would only want to do it once and I would be willing to pay extra to do that.

That is, IF I can find someone local to do the work for me.

Hi. Did you ever have a problem with too much heat from the exhaust pipe which would get closer to the bigger than stock tire?
Hi,
No, my exhaust is chopped short of the tire, and has a turn down prior to the tire. a custom exhaust or cutting like I did is needed to fit a 33" under the bed.

Hi folks I started a thread on my build however I would like to ask fellow members for help to determine current lift and so I can find correct shocks for it. (I recently bought it, I do not know current lit and previous owner jerry-rigged rear shock mounts).
Link to my inquiry is here:

Thanks in advance!

Just an update.
couple things. The turbo worked great-ish. These have no get up without a turbo. I had a bad manifold leak and the truck had no power. Fixed that and its very noticeable. So i cant imagine having it without a turbo at all.
So when i got this truck, the oil return was piped into a T fitting, inline with the vacuum return into the side of the block. And i was getting a lot of oil blow by. So i dropped the diff and everything. Pulled the oil sump and drilled and welded a bung into side of the sump for turbo oil return. And still getting blow by. My guess is how they had that plumbed, backed the oil up and blew the seals on the turbo. So im looking at other options right now.

Im looking at the garrett GT2554R. And basically plumbing it very similarly with coolant and the oil feed and drain.
Reasons im thinking about going this route:
Source a manifold pretty easily for it.
upgraded turbo thats oil and water cooled, and internally waste gated to 6-7p.
id like to clean up the old 2lte manifold and ct20 take off
a genuine toyota ct20, what i could find theyre about 2,000USD. I can get the upgraded genuine garrett for half that. So altogether with a new manifold, dump pipe, gaskets for the manifold and dump, new studs for the manifold...im looking at 1800 ballpark.
