Am hoping to get around to welding a few more brackets to the front bar (for spotlights and bash plate for winch) next week so I can finally get it off to the powdercoaters (am getting sick of looking at a rusty, white, black and now cold gal coloured paintjob)

Good looking axle! Something I'd like to change to on mine.

Good Job!

Thanks scrapdaddy, am keen to see the difference the rear discs will make...

Just read through, great thread and a nice rig! Love the detail on your axels, did you powder coat the nuts!?!?!

Haha I didn't quite get that excited, i did however replace the old wheel studs and nuts because they were toast (pretty sure at some stage in the axles lifetime a wheel came loose or fell off on one side, I even had to replace the hub)

Nice work mate, digging the axle swap! Do the 79 axles add much width?

Thanks! yeah the 75 axles are wider but not by much, maybe only an inch...They're not as wide as 60 series axles but wider than 40/45/55 I'm fairly sure...

You will like that 60 series PS!

Have you had any experience with 60 series PS conversions Pablo?? I'm curious about what sort of intermediate shafts work best, I've got all the bits together including a HJ75 intermediate shaft but it just seems wayyyy to long. Also have a HZJ80 shaft but its also too long...Have read heaps about not being able to cut and weld the shaft due to compliance issues...
I can't wait to get it on though, will surely feel better about driving on the highway!

Why yes, yes I do. Ha ha...

Get ready for 10 pages of ongoing discovery (aka mind-numbing detail) of what parts work for this: https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/fj...ersion-for-fj40-while-keeping-air-pump.84527/
You should be able to piece together w/ no cutting and welding given your access to 70 series parts.

Stumpo,

Here's the company I used for all the steering column parts. http://www.borgeson.com/

Went from the 55 column to the 60 box. Cut the shaft to length, no welding.

Thanks Ron, they've got some good looking gear and it looks real tidy on your build up thread but I think I'll try a 60 series shaft out for length first (might be less $$$)

Yeah nice, heaps of info! Thanks Pablo

Got some more work done this arvo, I didn't like the solenoid pack mounting system that came with the winch so I mounted it under the bonnet and made up some longer leads. Still need to mount the plug for the winch controller which I'm thinking of recessing into the upper guard and also running an in-cab switch...

Well made some progress last weekend, got the new rear end in and now just need to get a longer brake line made up to finish it off. Also finished welding up the rear bar yesterday so I pulled it off to get it to the powdercoaters this week.
Also picked up a 60 series intermediate shaft the other day which I think will be the perfect length for the P/S conversion. Called my engineer and got the go ahead for the conversion so will hopefully get it started once the rear end is finished

Thanks guys! Thought it might be time for an update considering I haven't posted anything for a while....
I have actually made some progress, the best being the fact that I clocked almost 250klm's on the Easter long weekend which is sadly the biggest round trip I've done in it (no wheeling pics though). Was super impressed with how it went - only real issue was the fan belt came a bit loose.
Have done some other things too....

Am pretty impressed with the difference the conversion makes, after getting a wheel alignment last weekend it drives really straight at high speeds and is much more responsive than the factory 55 P/S.
Less clunking too...
The shock tower is really only temporary - am waiting on some F250 towers which are probably somewhere over the north pacific ocean right now...

What P/S gearbox are you using, or did I miss it? I have been trying to source a factory P/S box, but you said the one you installed is so much better. So, please, do tell.

Not sure why, yours looks way better than the f250 ones! Nice work again.

Thanks Napster, it looks nice and shiny from the paint but its a bit agricultural...also haven't done the passenger side yet and I want them to look similar...

The steering box is out of a 60 series and the setup eliminates the drag link and the steering idler joint. There's nothing wrong with the factory P/S setup, but imho the 60 series conversion is a step above
