I was mentioning this truck to someone and remembered there is a thread for it! I do have some updates coming for this truck, i do still drive it every few weeks out on the town to dinner or bars or whatever. I never did post that last summer I did actually figure out the random fuel tarvation was sTINY chunk of plastic lodged inside the pump diapghram (Damn plastic gas tank :bang:), removed that, installed pump that was on the truck (3-4 year old Kyosan) and have had zero issues since.I did learn that his truck has THE Pinhead Youtube carb on it, and with some actual tuning (the idle mixture and speed sprews were all jacked when I got it) it has run 100% perfectly for the last 8-10 months.. smooth startup, great power up to 4-4500 rpm. I rev the hell out it, it actually sounds awesome with the headers and 2.5" exhuast even though it is a little on the loud side.

Let's see, a local guy REALLY wanted the 4-Plus front bumper so I sold that, and I had a almost new OEM bumper leftover from my dad's 77 so I threw that on.
Up next, a new suspension, power steering, discs, and a pile of new OEM goodies I've been piling up.. dash, lights, bumperettes, weather strip, fog lights, etc.

Random pics. Drove it about an hour (longest drive since NC last year) to go pick up a transmission for my 1JZ 79 Corona project which you can spot in the corner of the 3rd pic. Last pic is from Relic Run last year, behind my 71 FJ40 (Project dirt cheap 71)

That 4+ bumper was one of the last things I did to it, I was stoked to finally get one after all the years with the log. Not sure what happened between then and now but it ran great for me. I put that fuel pump in it, the carb, and the plastic tank too. It is actually sad to think about the time and effort it took to get it to where it is. I wish the old pics would still show up.

if I had a nickle for every plastic tank we've removed and tossed here to put new OEM tanks in... I'd have like a bunch of nickels 😁
I'm certainly no purist but the new Toyota tanks are the way to go for sure. I think most people just had no idea what was available from Toyota for these trucks even up to a few years ago. Since I found that plastic chunk in the fuel pump I have not had another single issue at all.

That carb was rebuilt in 2010, so it is past its warranty period.

I’ve seen a few of those front bumpers in Vermont when the 40’s gained in popularity in the ‘very early 1980s. Before that, CJ2 jeeps were the go to 4 wheeler…a lot of those had the same bumper!

I've been slowly collecting parts as good deals or customer take-offs have came up.. I got a good deal on a set of already refurbed jumpseats, a good deal on some pretty nice mustard hard top sides and ambulance doors (I sold the blue ones that were on the truck to a customer with a blue 40 last year) my dad refurbed another roof shell and swapped onto his 77 so I got that take-off, it needs a little work but is 80% there. I also got a working mini-truck PS box for free so I picked up a bracket from Georg to put that in. Not my 1st choice for PS for a 40 but I am looking for quick and easy with this truck. I also got a set of the Terrain Tamer parabolic springs to try out for myself before we start pushing them on customers (going to revert back to SUA in the rear, and lower the truck about 2" overall).

Anyways, ramble over. I am about to be neck deep in a full nut-and-bolt refurb on my 45 so I don't want to tear this truck up completely right now but I had some time and motivation this weekend so I decided to look at the tub and floors a bit and really evaluate them and make a plan for the future and what I want to do. I would like to get the top and doors on here, and the jump seats, so I can get some space back.

Some pictures of the current tub situation.
All four roll bar reinforcements are rusted through the wheelwells and all lower four jump seat stifferrs are rusted or gone as well.
As well as the sill being replaced with 2x3 tubing.
Definitely fixable.

I decided to do some quick patches on one side and see how long that took, as well as extract a stiffener that goes under the wheel well for the lower jump seat mounts so I can have some new ones made. (I didn’t see anyone selling these, so I guess I will)

I figure, I can’t make this truck any worse, right? :)

New jump seat seat reinforcements in progress.

I also removed the captured hardware for the rear door hinge, all the bolts snapped off and the lower retainer was really mangled. I was able to form that back into shape pretty well with hammer and some 1/2” plate as dollies (I am NOT a sheetmetal guy at all)

Had a batch of captured nuts for the ambulance doors made as well (these will get tapped M6 before install)

Also. Every. Single. Bumperette. Bolt was snapped off in the rear crossmember. Got all eight of those drilled out and threads tapped so I can put some bumperettes on eventually.

Really the next step for this rig is 1/4’s, sill, replace the roll bar reinforcements, and patch the wheel wells while those are out, and replace the front floors.

There’s about a half dozen small spots everywhere that I could almost justify building a new tub from CCOT panels but I don’t want to spend that kind of money on this truck, and I think I can do a pretty good job patching those spots manually.

I think I am going to hold off on all this until after my FJ62 transmission swap project, and my 79 Corona project, and my 45 project are all finished, I’m getting distracted enough from those as it is and this is a running /driving/tagged rig so I don’t want to really take it down for for more then a weekend.

Hahahhaa

The last run on sentence where you have 3 project in front of this one

Fingers crossed he get's tired of the PO's work, realizes he has too many projects, and sells it back cheap :hillbilly:
