Trying to find out if this is for a 3 speed case

I've searched and found there might be differences to the four speed version

It looks like the pto shaft Is different lengths
Is that it?

School me please spent the last four hours searching and now my eyes hurt!

You have posted photos of a winch, not a PTO box....

The winch does not care if it is a three speed or a four speed transmission/transfer case unit transmitting power

Or a lawn mower engine... Or leprechauns on a handcrank. ;-)

And the PTO is the same for the (non-split case) three and for speed Transmission T/Cs anyway.

Different drive gear in the T/C and different length drive shaft and linkages is all.

I guess I should have explained more! Wondering if there are different models of pto winches for the 40 series. And what year this one might be?

Honestly just trying to identify what I have here.

There are not.

Thanks:) this is the first one I have seen in person

Closeups

Hey Redgrrr,

Is there any way you could post a couple of closeup picures of the clutch mechanism. I just got my PTO yesterday and it looks like one of the previous owners had driven away with the PTO engaged and bent the pin that engages/disengaes the clutch as well as the bracket that holds the brake. I think as a result of that he removed the two "pins" on the lever that hook into the piece that engages the winch.

I have circled the part on your photo of what I mean and a photo of what mine looks like, bent and misssing the parts. I need to see a closeup/side view to see what it looks like in case so I know what to look for/create.

Thanks.

there aren't any differences that would prevent installation of an OEM PTO winch on a 20, 40, 60 or 70 series.

however there were some small changes to the fairlead and the gear case

the very early fairleads had a single roller without any support pieces.

as for the cases, I'm not sure when the transition occurred but earlier cases had a drain plug, a level check plug and a fill plug. the fill plug was never tapped in the later versions, using the fill check plug as the fill plug.

I see yours does have the top filler plug

There were a number of changes in the drive train I think.

WinchDrive2.webp

WinchDrive3.webp

Some use a bracket off the front crossmember (beneath the radiator) to support an intermediate driveshaft bearing but mine uses a bracket off the LH chassis rail.

This top pic even shows TWO brackets and TWO intermediate support bearings and I'm not sure what necessitates that. (That pic is still supposed to represent a 40-series AFAIK?)

And the engage-disengage lever arrangement varies too.

And some PTO gearboxes allow spooling out under engine power (ie forward + reverse driveshaft rotation) and others can't (ie. one direction of rotation only).

Looks like your just missing the two pins mate

On my winch, the worm gear shaft doesn't come out that far, in the front. It has a solid cover on it. No oil seal on that side. It also has the drain and fill plugs.

Hijack question, Has anybody rebuilt the pillow blocks, bearings and seal are no longer available.

Thanks, Ron

Looks like the cable came of the drum while winching and that is what bent those parts. Had it happen to mine so I made a spring loaded plate to keep the cable from coming off.

That also happens when the winch hook is attached to one of the hooks on the frame horn and then the cable is over tightened when done winching. Easy to do when alone since the clutch has to be operated from in the cab. I normally just get it close then spin the PTO driveline by hand to tighten it up. Takes longer but nothing gets bent. I also make sure I use the lock for the lever on the floor.

It would be nice to be able to spool out
How do I tell I'm getting the right levers and box?

I appreciate all the good info.
