Usually one is included when you but a new clutch. Some guys will cut off the input shaft of a FUBARed transmission and keep it for that purpose. I bet someone you know in Edmonton has one. Someone with an enormous........

trailer in their yard.

I'd take it apart if it were me. I'd want to see the whole works to make sure it was ok.

Larry,

If I were in your position, I would just replace everything. I always like to repair things in a pro-active way. I've found this way of building and maintaining my cruiser has fared me well so far. You've done all the work of taking it out. You may as well put a new clutch/pressure plate/pilot bearing/release bearing. As mentioned by Kevin, a clutch alignment tool is included when you purchase a clutch kit...you can also borrow mine if you need to.
Cheers!

I think I have an alignment tool you could borrow, but they are cheap to buy

You almost always get a plastic alignment tool when you buy a new clutch. It centers the clutch disc with the pressure plate and the pilot bearing.

It might be worth replacing the disc because the trans is out, but if the flywheel and pressure plate are in good condition after being cleaned, I think they could be reused.

I think the rear main engine should always be done at this point. Kind of a no brainer. Unless of course you drop your tranny/t-case assembly from four feet then there are other issues... hehe

Beek beek beek beek beek

Last night I took off the clutch disk and pressure plate and the pressure plate was jam packed with sand and grass and debris. I don't think I could have cleaned it out with it still on the truck. While I was blasting it with water I could see the fingers coming back into place. I'm pretty sure all is fine and I will reuse the pressure plate but not sure about the clutch disk. I think it's OK but does seem a bit worn. There are still grooves present but they are not deep. I think it should be good for a while longer.

As far as the main seal goes I probably will not change that either since from my research on Mud, that leads to the oil pan gasket being replaced and then where does it end.

Now before you all accuse me of being cheap, which I am, I want to say that I hesitate to replace all these parts because I see a complete teardown and rebuild within the next 5 years, max, and then all of those parts and seals will be replaced. I also don't want to break anything that ain't already broken!

I'll upload pics tonight. I was too tired last night.

A clutch disc is likely cheap and is cheap insurance anyway. I'd do that at a minimum.

OK Pics.

Dirty pressure plate.

If you can find it, can you bring it tomorrow night in case I reuse this disk?

Thanks

I get on my plane in two hours and don't land til 2 this afternoon. If it's easy to find I'll bring it otherwise I'm going to be running pretty tight. New Jersey to the crown and anchor in one day. Can't wait for a real beer.

Does anyone know how to get a hold of the owner of the Safari? Ryan was his name. He has a couple of good shots of me in that hole.

Larry, nice work on the clutch problem.

Further to the clutch loss that Larry and I experienced.

I finally got to remove the skid plate (broke another f'ing bolt) and inspection cover tonight.

There was lots of really dry mud. I tapped and turned the pressure plate many times, occasionally using a small pry bar to move the PP, and after about 1/2 hour and an outpouring of dust I had the PP working again. A quick spin around the block confirmed it was working well.

I wasn't looking forward to removing the tranny/tranfer case.

I will put a new foam seal on my inspection cover though, as the original one is half gone. The only ingress for water or mud should be the 1/2" drain hole at the bottom of the inspection cover. It would be almost impossible for a stick to get inside the bell housing. I'm really surprised that you had the big stick in there Larry.

Sounds like a tbar ready rig. :)
