a convenient option for the USB / AUX port for OEM 86190-0C020

Great instructions - much thanks to all in this thread for getting me started when we wanted to add a USB / AUX to our old 83 HJ60 with a new DVD / Receiver. Along the way of trying to adapt the 86190-0C020 as shown in this discussion (and as I saw on the Tacomaworld forum) to fit it into a modified switch housing and an existing dash hole, I found this ready-made device in Japan; and it made the whole installation a lot easier and with a more refined outcome. I bought two and will put the other one up on ebay; if there's interest in it, I'll pick up a couple more next time I'm in Japan.

Very cool looking. How much do those costs?

Antenna control

hello and thanks all for posting up all the info on this instal!
I'm almost finished and have had a chance to listen to this bad-boy, man what an improvement!!!

I'm wrapping up my instal today, working out the last issue - the antenna control. I purchased the amazon part - Scosch (or whatever it's called) and have that plugged in.. But, the antenna doesn't go up or down, either with the up/down buttons or automatically with powering on the HU in AM or FM mode.

Question, is there anything more to the antenna harness? I made the obvious connection to the HU and the existing (old style) antenna cable. Do I need to do anything with the spare blue wire, or the other leg of the harness?

Thanks!

I sent you a PM about this, there is a discussion about a loop on that aftermarket harness that loops pin 8 and 9, you need to cut that loop out then connect the pin 8 to the antenna wire.

Hope that helps,

T1819 radio connectors:
10pin connector:
1 -> front right +
2 -> front left +
3 -> ACC ignition +12V
4 -> battery +12V
5 -> front right -
6 -> front left -
7 -> ground
8 -> (antenna amplifier + output) now on antenna connector, you have to splice in here
9 -> amplifier control + output
10 -> illumination + input

6pin connector:
1 -> rear right +
2 -> rear left +
3 -> rear right -
4 -> telefone mute input, connect to ground to mute radio
5 -> illumination - input, connect to ground if not connected to rheostat (instument illumination dimmer)
6 -> rear left -

12pin connector CD changer, SAT, ...:
1 -> audio signal shield (ground) for pin2+3+4+5
2 -> audio R+ in
3 -> audio R- in
4 -> audio L+ in
5 -> audio L- in
6 -> mute in
7 -> ground
8 -> not used, unknown
9 -> AVC-LAN TX+
10 -> AVC-LAN TX-
11 -> ACC ignition +12V (I think it is an output, not 100% sure)
12 -> battery +12V (I think it is an output, not 100% sure)

Assuming you pulled the AMP out, here is the connections between the Scion HU and the car.

Required harness modifications:

1.) PWR ANT -- On the Scion R2 plug, pin #8 gets spliced into pin #8 (lavendar wire) of the R1 connector that will be abandoned behind the radio.

Thanks for the awesome write up! Just got mine installed in a 93. I just spliced a USB extension cord into the connector on the back. Worked great. FYI for those who can't get the Bluetooth to work...you must have the mic plugged in for Bluetooth.

Thanks again for the write up...I never would have done this without it! The USB connector not only controls an iPhone 5s, it also charges it. Sweet!

Very cool. Great work.

Time to add to this posting. Thinking about adding a waterproof sub to my system. Long story, but I lost my doors and with that went the speakers, so I am running motorcycle waterproof speakers that are treble only.

Anyone have suggestions on a waterproof sub?

Thanks,

I have one of these head units I want to get rid of. I never installed it, it's been sitting in a box in my closet. 40 bucks plus shipping for anyone interested.

Since the Scion radio has preamp rca plugs in it, I am assuming that I need amp and subs, so looking at the bazooka or like subs. Anyone have experience with these?

Years ago I had a Bazooka tube in my ghia. Worked well for it's use. No experience with the newer models and marine versions.

Nice write up! Well done.

Got it all wired up and no sub.... did some digging and the sub output is not on typically, you have to do this to find the options.

There is a secret menu that is not identified in the HU manual...

With the car on but the HU off, press and hold the menu button for about 3 seconds.

You should then hear a beep and then a new menu that you can't access when the HU is on will appear.

Use the dial to scroll through the setting choices which include...
the illumination color (blue or orange)
iPod direct control
Subwoofer control (which is set as off default)
Scion Sound Processing car type and
The opening display when you turn car on

Just turn the subwoofer control on and this allows you to get the sub pre amp output on and now you can control it from the normal menu screen...

This mod almost makes me wish my aftermarket single DIN would get stolen now. Then insurance Co. could buy me one of these.

Hey, I just got done installing this head unit in my 94 - this was a great guide to follow. I found (at least on a 94) that I could reuse the mounts from the factory stereo and get a good enough mount in the dash. I think it would be perfect if I took a little more time to trim up the dash, but I was in a huge hurry to get ready for a trip. Anyway, I've included a couple of pictures showing the 94 mounts on the Scion head unit, and the resulting position in the dash - again, could be made better if I did a nicer trim job - the harsh light makes it look worse than it does in person as well.

The other thing I did that made the job easier was take the face of the unit off via the black tabs. Once you (carefully) pry these tabs off, use a pick tool to pull the black edge out on the ribbon connection. The ribbon will slide right out. You can then use this to make a template to cut the dash insert.
