I'm in the process of a mini-truck disc brake conversion on my 1970 Land Cruiser and I was about to buy a steering knuckle centering gauge as recommended by the wise persons of this forum, since my parts may or may not be calibrated correctly. I called the toyota spx people (1-800-933-8335) and asked about the part 09634-60013 tool (as shown on their website SPX Toyota | Tool Detail) and was told that the tool was replaced by the 09634-60014 part because it was redesigned. Does anyone know if this is true or how I could find out? I was hoping to just buy this tool instead of fabricating one as I've seen elsewhere in the forum. My wife is going to visit her fam for a week soon and I was hoping to not have to make a tool in my limited amount of time.
If anyone has any info, please help.
Thanks,
kvhnry

I have one that I will loan out for a deposit equal to the cost of the tool plus you pay shipping both ways. Deposit refunded once I have the tool back in my possesion and undamaged.

I tried to buy one from them and it was unavailable with no ETA offered.

As an alternative, I borrowed one from a fellow mudder in the Midwest for the cost of freight both ways plus a little for a case or two of his favorite brew. You negotiate your own deal though. I asked and several people responded with varying offers.

I think the use of the tool is VERY important. I too did the minitruck swap, used the same shim arrangement from the donor and it was WAY off, at least on my drum-brake FJ40 axle housing. Getting the preload, spacing and using Marlin HD inner axle seals has proven beneficial in my situation.

One word of suggestion. Get an accurate, repeatable dial micrometer in the range of at least 8". Accuracy within a few thou is CRITICAL.

I gambled and ordered the 09634-60014

I just ordered the part from spx.
Cruiser_guy, I checked the shipping cost and it would add up to at least $50 so I figured I would gamble like a wild banshee and hope the 09634-60014 is the same or will at least work. I like to own the tools I use. My dad also has a cruiser in another state and would like to loan him the tool if/when the need arises. Spx said if it doesn't work I can return it for minimal cost so if it doesn't work, I'll be out shipping and I'll buy the HD marlin axle seals and use the shims the way I have them on the mini truck knuckles as a temporary solution. I appreciate the offer but the way my luck goes, your tool will get damaged in shipping or I'll drop it, or some other random event will happen and I'll end up needing to buy two tools instead of one and I won't know where to get one. :) I'm really careful with other people's stuff and I'm a fairly competent garage mechanic but I just don't want to gamble at this point. If the tool is way different I may want to take you up on the offer. Either way, I'll post a pic so that the question will be answered about whether or not it's the same tool. Someone has to be the guinea pig.

it's the same tool. the part number changed at some point in the past.

Is the SST centering tool actually available now? when I looked into this 4 months ago the ETA was unknown.

When I bought mine about 3-4 years ago is has the part number 09634-60013 on the box.

If you're needing it, I may be able to get it stateside and return can be stateside provided it fits with my return schedule.

I called this morning (4/7/09) and they said it would ship today and I would have it this week. I paid a little extra for the 3 day shipping. The tech support people were pretty worthless when it came to finding out if it was the same tool.

It cost $132.38 including 3-day shipping. I got it yesterday 4/10/09 and it looks like the right tool. I'll use it this week.

Listed as 09634-60013, but has been superseded by 09634-60014 when you check price and availability

It appears the 09634-60014 has been adapted with a removal sleeve so that it will fit into a drum brake or disc brake axle bushing.

This is quite a well-made tool.
