Matt's been working on the axle backing plates today. Finally got the bearings beat back on and had to make a run to buy a drill press. (I know he hated to buy another tool) Drilled the holes and is getting ready for the install. And rain... So hopefully it'll slack off so they can go back on and then get it back on all 4's even if momentarily. I know the neighbors love looking at the zuk with no back wheels and half painted. Neighborhood rednecks right here. But no one messes with us. :hillbilly:

Backing plates done, brakes next but it's buttoned up now so it looks better sitting in the driveway. She is having an ebony and ivory moment though.

Well, looks like E has already given you guys the run-down of the weekends festivities.

Yesterday was mostly about being able to get into and out of the drivers side without having to crawl thru and jerk on a zip-tie. Replaced the linkage and installed a pair of aluminum door handles to replace the broken ones. i pulled out the window glass and replaced the regulator and while I had it gutted I went ahead and threw it up on some saw horses and hit it with some 220 grit and broke out the Rust-Oleum and while it was drying I washed the track guides that I found in the bottom of the door so I could reinstall them. Once dry, it installed the new out side handle, regulator, the cleaned and silicon sprayed guides and the glass to finish it off. Then I couldn't leave the door green so that is why I got rattle can happy and finished off the drivers side.

I finished that up in time to take Mrs J and little bit out for a nice dinner.

Today was a long day, but as you all saw, it is now back on all 4's. I started this morning by driving the bearings and retainers onto the axles with the new retainer plates. Then I started working on the backing plate modifications. I quickly learned that I was going to need a drill press to make the holes properly. After some research on-line I found that LOWES had one that was pretty well recommended, so I headed out for that and a bi-metal hole saw. One bit of advice, measure where the hole you need to drill needs to be before you commit to a press. I got it home and assembled and discovered that the press wasn't deep enough to get the backing plate centered on the work surface. So I had to cut about a 1 1/2" notch in the backing plate in order to get it up in the press to cut the hole.

Finished the plates up and then after some cleaning and painting I was ready to start putting everything back together and it started raining.

It cleared off and I got everything bolted back together. So the rear is mostly back together. New diff, new axle bearings and seals. It just needs fluid and it will be ready to roll, not drive, but at least roll.

Once that company that I ordered some stuff from .... finally sends me my springs I can slap those in. I am going to work on getting the brakes back together this week and maybe work on getting the drive-shafts cleaned up. Also gonna get with Clutchee this coming weekend to pick up the 4.16 case to get ready to swap in.

Making slow steady progress. Got 5 weeks and counting to be ready for E to make her maiden run.

To-Do as of 9/29:

  • Rear brakes
  • Drive-shafts
  • rear springs and bushings
  • Front axle service
  • passenger door window regulator and handles
  • finish passenger seat install
  • re-wire propane solenoid
  • relocate the propane tank and re-plumb it
  • Finish painting
  • Sliders - EOR at the end of October
  • remove the air tank for now
  • new battery and make sure the hold-down is solid
  • Change oil and trans fluid and whatever other fluids don't get replaced by a rebuild or freshing up

So not much :censor: ....

So I called my friends over at LROR this morning to go another round about the springs and low and behold I actually got ahold of someone that not only knew what they were talking about, but also owned and wheel'd a Samurai. After a long discussion I now have a set of 4 springs on the way which should be here by Friday. I also exchanged several emails with the owner about my ills lately and he seemed receptive to the criticism. They even ate some of the shipping on the springs for my troubles. They are not quite back on the A-list yet, but at least I know who to call and ask for from now on. In the future I won't fool with the online system, I will just call and ask for Dan and work it out from there.

I also got a Mighty Kong t-case cradle and some other misc. things ordered from Trail Tough last night. At this point I am scared to add up the total investment, but since it should be practically new from the t-case down after this, we should be able to just wheel the wee out of it for a while.

At the point you'll be at when you get done you can probably wheel for years with minimal repairs. Just depends on how much stuff :princess: breaks when she goes wheelin!

Well I got my shipping notifications and looks like all parts will deliver on Monday unless the springs are coming from somewhere closer. So I guess fuel system and wiring may be the plans for this weekend, and maybe some time with the 4Runner.

Today's family event is brought to you by Clutchee. Tore down the new 4.16 today to install the Twisted T shift rails. Went petty well taking it apart and then removing the pins from the forks. Got the long one done and then onto the short one. Found that the 2x4 shift fork opening was longer on the new one so we did some asking around and decided to mod the fork to fit the opening. Got that installed and found that when we rotated the input shaft reverse it was hanging. Realized the shaft shim may not have had the notch placed in the housing precisely. Took it back apart and seated it correctly and back together it went. Seems good. We will have to wait and see if the mod to the fork makes a difference when trying to shift. For now gonna wheel it like that. There's a whole thing with the small and large flange sizes and decided to swap the rear flag out to large and leave all the rest small. No benefit from one size to another. I came in to do mom/wife things and he's working in the driveshafts now.

Man thanks again. I am sure E will put it to good use in a few weeks. And when the time come, I would love to do a little measuring on your link setup. :)

And thanks for the intro to Leinenkugel. Erin came home with a sixer of Sunset Wheat and Oktoberfest. Perfect celebratory beverage for getting the t-case back together.

In other news, change your u-joints regularly! I spent like 2 hours trying to drive out 2 joints... brutal. I will post some pictures from the camera in a few, but lets just say a grinder was involved before it was all said and done :D

Brian, you going to make it to GMP next month?

November 8-10. I would dig seeing the buggy in action in the "Jungle"

Today we got in out Trail Tough Mighty Kong T-case cradle, solid mounts, u-joints, and an extended rear brake line. I also got the bushings for the front springs. All 4 springs should be here tomorrow or Wednesday, so I am hoping the weather is nice this weekend so I can get some work done. I may try and get the brakes on this week one night if I get a few minutes. Need to stop by Napa and see if they might have a few flare nuts and a Tee.

Anybody got any experience with using a line-lock as an E-brake? I am doing a little research, and since the e-brake cable and hardware was gone when we got it, I am thinking that might be an easy solution. Thoughts?

I couldn't wait, so I went ahead and loose bolted the case into the new cradle. Pretty beefy looking little dude.

I have line locks on both of my trucks. Great for temporarily holding truck. The ones I use are electric solenoids so you don't want to leave them on for long periods.
