My Harmonic balancer grenaded today.... Yeah!!!!!!!!!!! Started with a funny smell that I chalked up to someone's burn pile... Then right as I crested the mountain pass in my commute the smoke started....

So I pulled over, and the smoke was pouring from around the crank shaft.... And the pulleys were all hot, so I waited a few minutes, thinking the worst, like shot main bearing up front or something similar...

I decided to try to get back on the road and coast it down the hill which would put me about half way home from the top of the mountain and I could then call my wife and have her tow me the 2-3 miles home...

So I fired it up, and pulled back onto the highway, and gave it a bit of gas, and a terrible noise and shaking happened. So I turned the engine off and coasted down....

When I finally rolled to a stop, I hopped back under the truck and felt the pulleys, and they were cool, which was odd... then I noticed the inner pulley was sheared from it's rubber mount...

Ok, no biggie, thankfully I had my real set of tools with me... So I pulled the belts, and with a 1/2 inch ratchet with a set of vice grips on the end of the handle I was able to use the starter to break the crank bolt free, and remove the pulleys and the broken pulley.... Back together now! I put the power steering belt back on as a special bonus to myself... and drove it home on the battery...

Oh, and NO ONE STOPPED! I hate people, you all excluded....

ALWAYS CARRY YOUR TOOLS!!!!!!!! It could have been much worse! Now I need a new alt belt, and to steal a new balancer from somewhere....

DANG. I knew there was a "rubber" damper on the crank pulley, but I've never heard of one coming a part.

As far as nobody stopping. I always stop when down in Baja. Probably not safe, but I do. The one and only time I broke down probably 20 gringos drove past me. This wasn't on some asphalt road either. This was Mex 5. Dirt, in the boonies, and not very well traveled. I was shocked that nobody even stuck there head out the window and asked "you OK?" No, they just whizzed by.

Maybe it was the 312k miles that did it? :D At least it wasn't raining, and at least it was still light out... I was worried for a bit though... to Toyota for making a truck that will still run with so many parts missing.... :D

pappy:

Next time you're up at the shop--I will show you one that had this happen.

But mine happened just outside Salida, CO on the way to Gunnison in the middle of the night (ok, about 1AM). I actually limped it back to Salida using some super glue and my ice axe to get it back together. It lasted that couple of miles, and even made it another half mile in the morning to a shop.

Good stuff 2ndgen. I like how you put the PS belt back on--you wouldn't want an unrefined ride, would you?

And, also related to this thread: I stopped for a vehicle just yesterday. A mini-truck towing a busted Chevy up a steep hill, but something went wrong and the 20R (this was an old mini) decided to start seriously overheating.
