B&S engine. It was a $125 22" ??? from WallyWorld. It's 5 years old. Probably about to cough a lung up any day.

Ah ha. If it was only $125 and it is a Briggs, I have a feeling I know the model.

If so, there's a good chance your Diaphragm is shot (resides in the middle of the carb (very easy to replace too)).

Find the exact Briggs model number on the engine, and then google the part number for the diaphragm.

The diaphragm has some rubber flaps that act as 1-way check valves that deliver fuel to the engine. IF one of the valves had failed, it could be allowing back pressure into your tank.

The real worry I see, is why is there pressure in the first place? I have a sneaking suspicion that it could be a valve issue (opening the intake valve before the exhaust valve is fully opened). That could be allowing exhaust gasses to pass into the carb, and make pressure inside of your gas tank. What a mess.

Buy. A. New. Mower.

s***.

This.

And give me your old one for parts. These cheap ass mowers are basically disposable these days; they are just not worth the $$$ to work on. But, I'd gladly charge someone for an $70 carb rebuild.

How much would you charge for this conversion?

That's badass!

What in the hell are you supposed to do with it though?!

My guess is...

HOLD ON TIGHT!

Got a question for the small engine wizard. We got an old weedeater brand riding mower with a 12.5 hp B&S motor (I think). We just dropped a new battery in it last Saturday and after a few hours of riding we shut it down. After sitting a few minutes went to get back on and it was dead as a door nail. I'm guessing alternator or regulator but was curious if that's where I should start and if you had any tips on troubleshooting these systems.

Thanks

I am not that familiar with non-magneto charged systems. If I were you, I'd start the engine and use a multimeter to see how much voltage the system in creating. My guess would be a bad alternator. If it looks like its working, check all the electrical connections and grounds.

And no, haven't come across a vintage JD riding mower.

Its been a busy few weeks. Multiple projects per day means I don't even have time to post here about what I am working on.

Business is growing very rapidly. It turns out that my biggest competition in town (a car garage that will occasionally fix mowers and stuff on the side) has decided small engines are not worth their time any more. Point being, I gave a stack of business cards to them, and they are sending many customers my way. Life is good! Also, I spoke with an employee of the small locally owned independent hardware store here in town, and they appear to be very interested in working out some sort of agreement with me, as they get calls from customers quite often looking for someone who can fix small engines. All that to say, I am staying busy and I am excited about what the future holds for my small company. That's right, I said company. I'm official now.

This morning, I fixed:

1. Craftsman Pressure Washer with an electrical grounding issue.
2. Craftsman push mower with Briggs engine.
3. Honda self propelled mower. (20 years old and starts on the first pull!)
4. Lawn Boy with a 2 stroke 6.5 hp motor. Sounds so effin bad ass for a mower.
5. Poulan blower with gummed up cylinder and spark plug.
6. Bolens push mower with 4hp Briggs engine.

It's been a busy morning, especially with the increased customer load from the local garage.

s***. I need more scrap mowers and junk like I need another hole in my head. Anybody want some broken weed eaters?

Business is going great. Last week, I made a killing.

Sadly, this is all weather dependent, so with this rain, I've been just a little bit idle.

Pretty cool update, guys.

Not sure what you are doing tomorrow morning around 9:00 a.m., but if you are free to listen, tune into MPB radio for Fix-It-101. They have invited me be a guest on the show to talk about small engines and the business I started. I did some work for a friend of a friend that was friends with the show's producer, and he got wind of what I was doing, and called to ask me if I wanted to be on the program. I am very honored to do this, and feel like I am a little out of my league. It pretty nerve-racking, especially being on the air for a full hour; I hope no one calls with any crazy issues! Wish me luck! I may be mistaken, but I believe the channel is 91.3 FM.
