The problem with airbags and steel bumpers is not the question of whether they will work in an accident. The question is whether they would be prematurely deployed since more of the forces are transferred to the frame (and therefore to the vehicle) since the steel doesn't crumple like the plastic. However, in contrast, since more force is applied to the frame, it is easy to infer that more force is applied to the occupants via inertia due to a more "abrupt stop". In that case, airbag deployment might be better anyway.

At any rate, having a steel bumper doesn't prevent the airbags from working - that's NOT what "airbag compliant" means. Airbag compliance means that the maufacturer put a bumper on a vehicle and crash tested it to determine if the steel aftermarket bumper performed similarly to the OEM plastic. Not necessarily a good thing, in my opinion.

The sensors aren't in the OEM bumper, so why should there be sensor consideration in the design?

Not sure why you're worrying about the sensors and compatibility... Search is your friend.

Good to know that the sensor is independent of the bumper - learn something new every day.

The main issue is timing of deployment. If the airbag is to soon, it might be deflated by the time your head move forward. If to late, nothing is there to cushion you. To be airbag complaint a steel bumper has to compress at the same rate as the stock plastic bumper. Companies like ARB test each bumper to confirm that deform rate is the same.

Looks great.. it's gonna be well worth the wait... any experience shipping to europe Slee?

I guess seafreight is gonna be the wisest option.

We ship to Europe on a regular basis, however it is always airfreight. Sea freight always seems to be cheaper initially, but then you end up with so many land / truck fees that in the end for a small shipment it is not much cheaper, yet takes 5 times as long. =

when is the new rear bumper comin out??? and please keep making the old ones i like them better

Speaking of, will there ever be a SLEE with a double swing out? 50% 50% or 40% 60% to carry the spare, jack and cans.

This will be out in about 2-3 weeks. They are going to powder coat this week.

We are finalizing pricing. We did not go with the latches as show, but used what we have always used. The latches are still a work in progress. The bumper will be available with no carriers (2 spindles already installed) and then the carriers will be sold separate.

We are also looking at making a 3rd carrier that will center the tire on the truck, but can be used with the same bumper for those that prefer the center carrier.

Early next year we will start with the accessories that can bolt to the ladder.

Will the third carrier be a single swing out? I mean is it that difficult to sock 2 rear bumpers? i see where you are coming from on trying to make one bumper with multiple attachments! But i would much rather have the old one, i love every thing about the old one the tire centered, single swing out, the hi lift jacks mount angle, and where the cb mount was! If you decide to start making the old ones again please give me a shout i would love to buy one.

the way I read it, there will be the base purchase of the rear bumper with dual spindles installed already. Then you can purchase the left, 40% swingout ladder/mounting frame and/or the 60% tire carrier swingout. Then he's going to try and get a third carrier, that will mount to the right side, but be centered like the current line of rear bumpers. The current problem with slapping the "old" design on this new bumper is where the latching mechanisms attach(I assume) and that will require some re-working.

Personally, I like the new idea of base model with arms sold separately.

Now back to the front bumper, already in progress and almost ready for production!!!!!

SLEE:

What are the possibilities of having the hi-lift mounted sideways behind the tire (like the original bumper) or on the side of the ladder?

I dont know if its the picture or what, but the Hi-lift looks a little awkward/ out of place on the right side of the tire.

I realize that the bumper is extremely close to being finalized, just wondering?

Just two more things: :bang:

Has the "base" bumper design changed at all?

Oh, what are the seperate accesories gonna be???

Other than that the bumper/ idea looks AWESOME!

Thanks!

The only thing I don't see is a stop lock for the swing out that also limits the travel, why not?

So unlike the picture I posted, you must pull the pin after unlatching the swing arm then open to a limited radius and then the pin drops into another hole, is that correct.

Thanks for post the close up, is there other pics of this bumper since I am new to the 100 forum.
