I found the proverbial "55 in a barn" yesterday. I talked to the owner and looked at the truck. It is definitely a parts rig. The drivetrain is fine, the body is shot-rust! Would it be worth my time to buy it and part it out? I'll make a few dollars and keep parts in the community. The owner knows what he has, which is why it hasn't been hauled as scrap.

Thanks
Dave

The frame is good, too. I don't enough about the 55 to know which gizmos are worth anything.
Even with the common parts, it's probably worth doing. He only wants $500.

If you do buy and part out I call dibs on the drivers mirror, sun visors (if they are good), any vent hoses that are good, the front fender mounted signal lights if they are the newer '55 style, the rear reflector trim rings and the licence plate lights if they are free of rust.

What year is it?

Oh, it has "ASCO" hubs. Look just like aisin. Better? Worse? Collectible?

They are the same. ASCO stands for Aisin Seiki Company. But I think the ASCO branding was an early name for Aisin.

not to rain on your parade, but you'll end up with alot of time taking parts off, sending pics, checking shipping, waiting for payment, if they do buy it. some items that are wanted will be the same ones that are worn out on your rig. plus hauling the stuff that doesn't go to the recycler.

I have the space, both inside and out, and decent neighbors who don't mind my side business, we have no covenants where I live. I've parted probably 10 rigs now, and I still have parts that I thought would sell from the first one I did.

76 for $500. would be ok, disc axle, 4 speed

Are you sure it's to far gone?

Have any pics of the rust?

I just hate to see these pigs go down with out a fight!

Especialy a 76!!!

After all this is the "Iron Pig PRESERVATION Society"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry! I just get a little tore up knowing there might be one less piggy at the trough!!!:hillbilly:

;p

I have a lead on a 62 that I'll check out tomorrow. So I may buy that instead.
I don't have any pics yet, so I can't help you guys there.
I have thought about the shipping/parting thing and that is kind of holding me back from buying.
I'll let you guys know by Friday.

I'm assuming that the axles are the same as my 40.(?) If so, i may keep the birfs as spares and put the diff in my 60 (I already have a 4.11 in the garage).

The drive train in the '40 and the '55 are the same.

So are you going to do it?

Upon further review.....I don't have anyplace to store it during the parting process. (I lost that vote 1-1)
Sorry guys.
However, if anyone wants this truck, I can hook you up with the owner. The truck is located in northern michigan. If you guys don't want it, I know someone else semi-local who may want it.
