What gears are in Shelia? Don't sell the FF.

I disagree, he wont need a full floater...its more maintence with little gain in preformance.

I would recoupe costs by getting rid of it.

Plus fj62 axles are my favorite of all cruiser axles, Factort trussed, 4.11 fine splines, Ton of aftermarket support.

My 2 cents....:princess:

"I also can't figure out how to get the ignition/lock cylinder out for the glow cycle..."

Put the key in the 'acc' position and use a small punch or pin to press the little detent pin on the side of the aluminum housing which hold the ignition barrel. Push the pin in and hold it in, and then you ought to be able to withdraw the barrel with the key in it.

What sort of glow system are you going with? Manual/Wilson switch? Factory Superglow?

Cool. That does help...
I'm thinking that I will be keeping the factory setup from the HJ60, not exactly sure what it is called, but you turn the key to the "G" spot :), and hold it for ~15 seconds until the glow light goes out, then crank...

As for the wiring harness....I would use the HJ one. Even though an air horn was spliced into the front it should not be to hard to clean up. I would worry about the window/mirror controls last, leaving the wiring for them in place and splicing it in afterwords.

So, I still vote HJ harness...

I did the reverse swap, diesel to petrol, there are 4 relays and 2 timers to control bits of the 2h diesel, as well as about 40 extra wires. I origonally had the intention of removing them but it became too hard so I disconected everything I dont need from the 2h harness and ran new wires to compensate.

unless you are VERY proficient with these motors, I doubt it will run correctly without the 2h wiring harness.

It will drive you insane trying to work, it out.

Because of your time restraints, I would use the diesel harness and adapt everything to it later

If you need copies of the diesel wiring give me a yell and I will post them for you

The light at the end of the tunnel keeps getting further and further away. I may need those wiring diagrams, I have access to the FSM, but not sure how good those diagrams are. Thanks.

The factory HJ60 in Canada, where they only appeared from '86~'87, had the Superglow system, where the glow period is all of 2 seconds long. Earlier HJ60's had the slow glow type of plugs, 15~30 seconds to glow.

I have 24v. Superglow parts if you're looking for any, along with 24v. relays and glow timers for the HJ60.

On my HJ47 I adapted a 60 series steering column to fit, and along with that went for an early 60 series ignition barrel, which I had to source from Australia. The first two years of 60 diesel trucks had a 'G' setting on the barrel just in front of 'start' and this was also against the spring - thus, after starting, the key can be jiggled up to 'G' manually to apply a little more juice to the glow plugs if need be while the engine warms up. I like the simplicity of the manual system, especially if you can use factory parts. With this system, I have no need for a timer - I use the early 'glow plug controller' instead, which is nothing more than a coil of wire that glows red when current goes through it.

If you can get a FSM that covers the post '85 HJ60/HJ61, please let me know. I'm looking for wiring info. The diagrams in the FSM are about the best you will find. Toyota also put out separate vehicle wiring diagram books, but I've had no luck so far locating one.

Ordered the '85-'87 clutch master cylinder from Mel Lowe's link (holy cow that was cheap, and does not look like a rebuilt unit), and am finishing my '87 pedal bucket purchase from a fellow mudder.

Next question: Radiator. Use the 62's or use the 60's? I was intending on using the entire front clip from the 62, but do not know if that radiator is designed to handle the cooling requirements of the 2H motor. I don't think I can swap out just the radiators, different dimensions, correct? Anyone? Bueller?

I will take photos of both core supports and radiator and will post them tonight.

Doesnt matter which one you use, they should bolt up the same. I would use whatever one looks better. But as tapage said if the inlets are reversed just swap them on the clips...a 10 min job maybe.

What you should be doing you slacker is putting down the stick of tofu and working on slowy pulling the whole wiring harness out of the HJ. Nothing hard about that, just time consuming...

Have at it slacker:flipoff2:

While the general disrespect (for your elder) is most welcome (:flipoff2:) , I will have you know that when the kiddies are all tucked in for bed and the wife has been man-handled enough , I go outside, turn on the portable dual 250-watt flood lamps and work for an hour or two. That wiring harness is coming out, slowly but surely. But I curse while doing it, because I KNOW rewiring the 62 will be the biggest pain in the ass part of this whole swap. Deo's not even doing his (Frank is).

I will need help with this. What does Wes charge by the hour? Nevermind, I know the answer... :D

I don't really think its going to be that bad. Pull it out, plop it in the other one. If you need this rig to be on the road fast, there are a few things you can leave out for the time being... Interior lights, mirrors, windows etc etc..

Pull the ignition cylinder, and swap the hj gauges in the 62 bezel. Then just hook up the wires that goes to it, then plop your square head under the hood and hook up all engine connections because they all stayed the same. Just as all the gauge connections stayed the same.

Not arguing, but the harness will need to be flipped, which is really just upside down. Do you see any issues with that?

All your gauges will read upside down:flipoff2:

I think only the idiot lights will need to be moved over, the gauges are spot on (though the tach goes to 5K instead of 4).
But even if gauges need to be swapped, this will be the easiest part of all...

Hey Tofudebeest! I have a HJ60, and have tinkered a bit with the harness. I even have a Haynes Manual on it (which btw is American, that stinks, I'm used to the English, were everything is done and told. In the American, everytime there is something a bit complicated, it says: "this is a complicated procedure, please consult your local mechanic" Liability issues crap!)
But, to the issue, if there is anything I can help with I'll be glad to!
Fx i know the preheatersystem... and it is a pain!...

I am using the entire HJ harness in my swap... took me about seven hours to carefully pull it from front to back... I labeled everything with masking tape and a sharpie. I am thinking reinstalling into the FJ will take a wee bit longer but overall, it is not too bad. I also pulled the entire ignition switch and everything to install into the FJ.... the 2H should work just as Toyota intended, mine is an '87 Canadian Spec with the 2sec glow...

Did yours have the radiator air block (kinda like a window shade that pulls down and latches) to raise the operating temp in cold weather?

I din't notice one on his, but i have one laying around if ya need it.

Just having a thought while printing the manuals. I forgot about the right hand left hand thing when I was on my soapbox last night.

Would it be better to remove the hj harness, unravel it all and use the sections that relate to the diesel separate on top of the 62 harness, this is sort of how i did my v8 swap.

with the diagrams I am abou to post up you should be able to identify the wires you need, fashion them up into a loom and run them separate to the 62 harness
