Well done on the seat mods up above. I'll have to swipe that idea. I may have to repostion my brackets altoghter and fashon up a leafspring suspended seat! this would help with my thickass springs and crappy shocks!

Sorry for the thread dredge, but those of you who did Grant's method, 1/4" or 3/8" flat stock? For those with 1/4", did it flex at all ?

:D

I did the full bars mounted to the stock mounts and did not flip anything. My seat rail is as far back as possible, hitting the wheel well. Then i marked, drilled and tapped new holes. I used 1/4" material and it is plenty beefy. The 3/8" would be overkill and very hard to bend. I used a torch to make bending the 1/4" easier.

As my seats don't recline or tilt up I feel like I'm leaning back more than I like while shifting. I would like to raise the rear mounts to sit more upright. A project for another day.

Thank you !

How about making the passenger seat adjustable?

Why? I put some blazer seats in mine and ended up removing the sliders on the pass seat so the seat would sit lower. I decided there was really no reason for me to make that one adjustable.

Slider on passenger side needed to wife having knee and hip replacement. Needs to put leg up on longer rides.

Bikersmurf, again thanks for the help. I think the ideas in this thread would be the easiest way to get some more room. If you Google "FJ40 unistrut" it should pull up a link to another site that got me going in that direction. I was hoping that by moving the seat back a bit it would make it a little more comfortable for my left foot on the gas pedal. Seems like my ankle doesn't like to stay at a backward angle for any amount of time.

Since I happen to have my seats out... This is a great idea.

I just did the mod also using 3/16 flat bar...since im a bit shorter i added the 1 1/2" square tubing to raise it up.....1 1/4" on the front bracket and 1 1/2" on the rear bracket to level the seats out a bit.....huge difference in the leg room. I bought the longer metric bolts so I didn't have to weld to the existing seat mounts.....for bolts and metal it was only about $25 and maybe 2 hours of time...

Like the idea of using the square tubing. A little more over the hood visibility would be nice. Did you notice any flexing of your mount using the 3/16 bar stock? Were you able to source the bar and tubing locally (big box/hardware store) or did you have to go to a metal supply place?

home depot for the flat bar($12), ace hardware for the bolts($8) and a metal supply store for the square tubing remnant piece ($2)......I haven't driven it much since I installed them but I'm not noticing any bending or flex..and it was easier to drill then the 1/4"...I'm 210lbs and it didn't budge with me on it..I was initially concerned with it tipping a over due to the tall stock mount but there isn't any flex there either..

Looks great. Did you bend the flat stock by eyballing it or measure something?

Canadian 40s all came stock with manual 'Throttle' controls which allow you to take your foot off for a while and move your ankle around on long drives. I'm 6'4" by have got used to the seat position over the last 22 years. Higher wouldn't work, but when I repaint the rear mounts I will likely put them on 'Backwards' and move the left mount back. That'd only leave the center mount to sort out. Might look into options to move the passenger seat back a smidge since there's not a lot of space between the seat and the front hoop of the cage.

Anyone know how the RHD 40 seats adjust? Are they just higher?

I am looking to do this on my 76 to get some more leg room. Mine has a Tuffy Console...can anyone confirm if everything will fit properly doing the reversal? Also just to confirm, you only reverse the rear brackets and not the front?

Tuffy first fine

I only reversed the rear ones, added a small piece on the front brackets.
