seat braket reversal - more leg room

I am looking to do this on my 76 to get some more leg room. Mine has a Tuffy Console...can anyone confirm if everything will fit properly doing the reversal? Also just to confirm, you only reverse the rear brackets and not the front?

Did this last year. Best Mod Ever. I bought the precut flat bar. I believe it was $89. Honestly, it was worth it. Also have Tuffy console.

Ok, so I am looking to knock this out this weekend and have a couple questions...
  1. How many bolts have to be removed to get the seat off? Just the 4 corners?
  2. Do you flip all 4 brackets or just the rear ones? Just the front?

1. 4 bolts for the seat

2. Just flip the rear brackets and scab a small piece of flat stock for the fronts.

Years ago I bought a set of flat bar sections already bent and drilled from a fellow Pirate4X4 member. I could use them on my '71 FJ40 build or I can locate the front left and rear seat brackets for the drivers seat further back - don't think it has the mounting points because it has the stock split bench seats. I'm pretty sure I'll be moving the tool box out of the way, that should make things easier.

This may be a stupid question, but anyone know if you flip the brackets to make more room or purchase the bracket from cruiser solutions can you still slide the seat up for a short person??
I'm 5'3...the seat is fine for me, but my 6"5 husband's knees are in his chest!!! When I let him drive her...I would like for him to be comfortable.... We have torn down the interior.... before we put her back together I would like to fix the seat thing.

One more question.....I would like to see the pictures from the previous post (#8) , but can't, anyone know why??

Thanks:)

I'm 5' 5" and in my Zebranator, I bought some 1.5" (or 2" I'm not sure) square aluminum block. Made four lengths exactly the size of the top of each mount. Drilled a clearance hole in all four, bought extend metric bolts and tada! I could see the hood!

Chump change back then.

One of the best and easiest mods.

Post #12 and #32 have your answers.
1/4 x 1 1/2 x 22
Post #32 has the addition of some risers to give another 1 1/2 of height.

There is another post using a slightly different method between the seat and the sliders. it may give you even more range than this mod.

Future Wall of Shame:
Seat Extension Mod pics... FWIW I bought a piece of flat stock at True Value 14$, extra bolts $8... Big boxers didn't have good bolts nor the flat stock... neither did the Metal supply store. Bought a 4' section of 3/8 and cut into:

20 1/4" Outboard
23 1/4" Inboard
I had to stop at the metal supply to get the piece cut as I could not put my hands on hack saw and correct blade... they did the cut for free.

Flipped the rear mounts but saw that it would NOT work to flip the front DS.
I used a block and clamps on my workbench to heat/bend/drill... My vise is a POS.
I picked up the "HOT ROD" for rusty bolts and used that to heat my flat stock. It really worked great but no clue how to use in tight spaces.

Since i flipped the rear mounts, I wanted to use the original bolt and hole for the rear mounts... simpler.

Once the flat stock was cut to length, I marked where I wanted my "bends" with pencil, clamped to edge of table, heated it up and used the pipe wrench with some body weight to bend AT my mark. I wanted these to sit flush so as to give me no bounce or weak points.

I overbent one spot and just straightened it in my vise.

Since I don't have shop, garage or drill press, LOL, I had to do some creative hand drilling. Nothing like watching that drill scroll all over the place even with a tapped starter hole. I'm not ashamed to admit that I got creative to get my "big hole" for the back mount bolt. Winnow. work that drill, destroy some bits and finish with a round file to make sure the holes lined up. little messy but hidden.

I could NOT get the seat in with my Tuffy mounted. The tab that sticks out of the seat was hitting the console, especially that bolt.

Seat is IN!! MUCH more legroom and I am at full extension to get my clutch fully pressed!!

For tomorrow I will have to figure out my Tuffy. I'm thinking I will pull it out and work the bottom bracket as much as i can and then put some "spacers" under the rear mounts.

used a pencil to mark holes from under pic #3
Had to pull that second chrome bolt on front inboard to get my seat rail installed pic #3,4,5

Hope this helps the next guy!

the "cap" nuts on the tuffy aren't deep enough! Put a nice slice in my palm on that beotch pic#3

Pic #1,2 tab/bolt and Tuffy both want to occupy the same space.

Pic #4 finished product. still have to do the console rear mounts.
