Seriously though, is there a preferred comms setup for this event?
Have ham, could have cb, thinking about GMRS.
Looked around and didn’t see anything about it.
Ham works well especially if you have a conversion chart to GMRS

I am transitioning to GMRS as well, though I am considering a Ham radio. For those new to this service like me, Ham and GMRS require a license, and you need both licenses if you have a Ham/GMRS combo radio.

Here are a few resources that I found helpful in my search:

Info about the FCC GMRS licensing requirements: General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) - https://www.fcc.gov/wireless/bureau-divisions/mobility-division/general-mobile-radio-service-gmrs

Because the government is confusing, here is a page that someone created to help navigate the above website: Getting a GMRS License - https://quality2wayradios.com/store/gmrs-fcc-license

I got the GMRS license last year. $30 and answer a few questions. The “Navigate it” page was very helpful because, yeah, government 🙄.

I have the handheld Radioddity GM-30. About $23 from Amazon or eBay. It works great and is clear as any fancy name brand hard wired GMRS radio. I did get the license, but I don’t think anyone is seeking out or even cares about unlicensed GMRS users. Point is don’t feel like you need some fancy or expensive/complicated setup. Handhelds are nice because you can go anywhere with them.
GMRS was the standard in camp at SAS 7. If you have HAM make sure you know the GMRS frequencies so you can communicate with the majority of folks using GMRS.

We had these made last year and will probably have them again this year. They are on plastic cards for a longer life…

Is there anyone else who might be interested in going to the Bachelor Syracuse mine tour? It’s $20 per person with discounts for seniors and kids. I might grab a ticket for Wednesday at 2 p.m. I think that I remember hearing that the raffle starts at 3?

I haven’t been to the mine tour in over 30 years and it was sold out the last time that my wife and I stopped by.

I’ll let the adults confirm but the raffle is later but we do the group photo in the afternoon. You don’t want to miss that.

Group photo first around 3:00 and raffle to follow. Not set in stone but this is what we would like to see…

We did the mine tour a few years ago and frankly both my wife and I were very disappointed…. The tour guide was good (he claimed his great grandfather had worked in the mine… not sure it was true, but at least he was convincing!).

You basically walk maybe 300-400 feet horizontally into the wet, side “drain” of the mine that was blasted into the side of the mountain to drain all the water that had been filling the vertical main mine shaft. IMO, there are much better options for mine tours in CO (cripple creek, etc). I believe there is also a mine tour near Silverton, but have not personally been on it.

I’ve been to the Molly Kathleen Mine in Victor, which is where a fatality happened recently. I’m not sure that I’ll be going back there. I’ve also done the tours in Silverton and the ones in Creede. There is probably a reason why we never went back to the mine tour in Ouray. Thanks for the feedback.

I did the same thing. Government is even more confusing behind the curtain.
Been using a small Midland FRS radio many times on Trails in CO and Moab no license required, if staying legal and cheap is of relevance (all the channels you need) on the Trails. Got transmissions from Fins and Things around Monticello, UT. Around 50 miles or so out, depending on obstructions with it, good for about 1 miles in Ouray area. I am Ham and GMRS licensed as well, but just a FYI.
KF0DOO out.

Not SAS-related, but I spotted this guy in my neighborhood today as I was driving home. Had to stop for a chat. Said he’s done all the trails in the San Juans and it made me think of wanting to be at SAS instead of dealing with snow. Pretty wild truck!

I remember your crappy little radio worked great Curtis. I can’t tell much difference in ones that cost more or less.

License for GMRS: don’t ask, don’t tell 🤫😬

Two tasks completed today. New bushings on the fixed ends of the springs. Not real impressed with these ARB bushings.
Also did the $17 steering wheel wrap from Amazon. Feels much better than the thin plastic.

Well the roof rack and the “light bar” are definitely something!

I keep thinking about the amount of time spent rigging up all those lights…

Then you got a bump too hard and have to spend three hours re-aiming all of them.

My hand held works fine, I carry it in case I need to get out and spot for someone or if someone needs a radio. But my hard mounted radio is far superior and everyone in the rig can hear it better.

Speaking of local tours/attractions, would there be any interest in doing a trip on the Durango/Silverton narrow gauge railroad? There is a soft spot in my mechanical engineering heart for anything narrow gauge…. Plus this is a national treasure that warrants support.
