Speaking of local tours/attractions, would there be any interest in doing a trip on the Durango/Silverton narrow gauge railroad? There is a soft spot in my mechanical engineering heart for anything narrow gauge…. Plus this is a national treasure that warrants support.
My wife and I would be interested

I’ve got a picture of my brother and I riding it, circa 1976.
I might be interested.

I may also be interested in riding the train. Were you thinking of riding the bus to Durango and the train back?

I am also looking at the Old Hundred Gold Mine Tour.

Hello Mike, If memory serves right, they offer round trips with the start being in Durango but maybe they do a one way with bus return too? There is a museum in Durango too attached to the station which is worth a visit too. Once I have a rough idea of interest, I’ll contact them to see if there is any option for a group rate.

Cheers, James

My hand held works fine, I carry it in case I need to get out and spot for someone or if someone needs a radio. But my hard mounted radio is far superior and everyone in the rig can hear it better.

How is your tablet mounted? I see counduit coming up from the console does that hide the mount or is it attached to the dash?

This sounds right for the D&SNGRR departing only from Durango. As you mentioned, their summer 2025 schedule isn’t posted though I recall round trip via the train, round trip train/bus or bus/train, or one-way, all depending from Durango. I was thinking about public transit but I remembered that public transit runs from GJC to Durango via Cortez, not Silverton.

Sweet! I just checked their website and booking hasn’t opened yet. Propose we see who else might be interested and organize accordingly.

My wife and rode the train last year. It is an all day ride if you ride from Durango to Silverton and back. If I did it again, I would consider parking my truck in Silverton and getting a ride to Durango to ride up and not take the return trip. I am not sure if they sell a one way ticket or not. If you’re looking to fill a full day then go for it. It is a slow train.

Only take the train one way. Both ways is a very very long day. It's an awesome trip.

Hey SASers,
If you have any questions for the KOA and have not heard back, please give me a heads up. I am the contact person for KOA-SAS.
Jeff is a busy GM at the KOA and if I can help make things easier or answer questions for him, I will if I can.
Any questions or concerns you are welcome to private message me here.
Hope all is warm and well!
I got my call on Friday, and I'll be in the same spot as last year. Can't wait!

Washed 29 years of grime out of Betty's engine bay yesterday. Now to burn in my @cruisermatt LS engine mount brackets.

I took the train two years ago. It is almost a 2 hour drive to Durango one way. It is an 8 hr round trip on the train. 3 hours each way Durango to Silverton, two hour layover to shop and eat, then 3 hours back to Durango. Figure a good 13 hours for the whole thing. We had the parlor car, Adults only and your own host aka bar tender. Very scenic tour!

Are there leaders and trips planned Monday through Friday, or any kind of general schedule that fills the week? Or are there days we’ll be looking for stuff to do?

Each morning the trail leaders write their planned route on a whiteboard at the registration tent. You find a trail leader going somewhere you're interested in and tell them you'd like to join. They'll gauge your vehicle and experience against the difficulty of the trail. Groups typically cap at 8 trucks, and a leader should have an experienced driver bringing up the rear of the group.

It's an all volunteer event, and this is vacation for everyone. Groups of friends head off without involving anyone else. That's their prerogative of course, and I was in one of those groups a couple days. Still, it's more fun for newbies and lone attendees if trail groups are formed dynamically. @RocketCityCrzrs Rory is a superstar in that way.

There's a beginner's run on Monday on the Red Mountain trail.
