Super busy with building this thing over the weekend, but made lots of headway. One more tire support and the gas can/cooler holder to go before paint. Then it's a little carpentry to make the platform. On track for a Thursday departure for KC.

Today we installed new pistons & rings, put the rebuilt head on and hooked up coolant stuff. Tomorrow we will torque the head & manifold, put the carb back on, put in oil & water and hopefully start the break in.

I don’t like doing this stuff, this close to the deadline, I’m sure you don’t either...again, good luck, see you there!

@ceylonfj40nut man is this absolutely perfect timing. I JUST NOW got off the phone with Maureen telling her that we’ve addressed the last issue and literally can now finish packing.

I won’t go into great detail because it will boor everyone, but the short story is we completed the pistons, rings and head on Saturday the 27th. Minor issues with h2O leaking from t-stat housing and a broken wire to the ICS, easily addressed.

Fixed those and it is running great, idles @ 650, no other leaks and running very strong...BUT...still a bit of an overheating issue. Over the last several days we did numerous little things to address the problem. Each helped but did not completely solve the problem.

This am we changed the bracket on my smog pump eliminator that I got from JimC and corrected my installation error and now the fan belt STAYS tight and the temps are in proper range. For the last several months I’ve been running around with a loose fan belt but was unaware. The problem was due to my installation error of the bracket. Would tighten the belt one day, and the next time I checked...it would be loose again. Now corrected.

It’s triple digit temps here and I’ve got some more driving and break-in to do between now & Thursday when I change the oil again but I finally think all is good for us to pull out of here as planned on Friday. Wow, this is really cutting it short...but right now I feel much better than this time yesterday. See ya next week.

anyone have a suggestion of an easy drive out of Ouray that's scenic to take my wife and kids on before the event actually starts? thinking anything with ghost towns, mining ruins or waterfalls.

Stony Pass is an absolutely gorgeous drive. If you go up from the Silverton side it's a very easy trek. You'll drive over the headwaters of the Rio Grande (was just a trickle of water when we ran it in 2017). There is a beautiful meadow to hang out in and have lunch as well. I plan to do that very trip this year.

@4Cruisers took a group of us into Silverton via Stony from the Creed side for SAS1. (Thanks, John!)

Edit: No ghost towns or waterfalls as I recall, however.

Owl creek pass is amazing.
 
I've heard that several times. Where is the trailhead? We are close man!
Just north of Ridgway, take a right as you head north towards Montrose. Owl Creek Pass takes you over to the drainage of the West Fork of the Cimarron.

That's the drainage on the left side of the ridge. Ouray is down below just off the right center of the photo. More on Owl Creek Pass in my Post #381 on Page 20, including more on Courthouse Mountain, where the photo above was taken from.

I'll probably be bringing a SUP and a mtn bike for anyone interested in joining. I am leaning towards the Ridgway trails for biking, open to some alpine lake options for the SUP. I'll be ready for play as long as the 80 makes it ;)
I wish I could load up my SUP!! It would have to go on the RTT... 🤔 not sure that would be appreciated... 😁
 
Rear main seal was noticeably leaking today. Nothing I can do about it before coming with my sch. On the advice of multiple sources I’m gonna still take the 80 and just keep the oil topped off!

No worries there. Good rust proofing. Might have to wash your back window at some point. Just watch the level to get an idea of the oil loss rate. I drove my old 60 to @Ocho77 's party last year and had to stop for oil on the way up (every 45 minutes), and fill up on the trail. She purred like a kitten.

Just like old Harleys and Blackhawk helicopters, only if it stops leaking is when you got real problems.
