Grounding & Starters

I just bolted my battery ground to the block.

Haven't checked the headlights, but I get a lot better performance from my starter.

It was a tip I read in another thread...

Andrewfarmer... he recommends 3 grounds: Batt to Block, Batt to Chassis, Chassis to block.

It's a good tip

yea, pretty sure its not on backwards.
i think the head to block dowels keep you from doing that.
plus, the holes for the push rods are only on one side.

No. call it upside down if you like. If you put it on the wrong way, the only significant difference is that the oil hole to feed the rockers is blocked (as the hole ends up in thewrong place).

Everything else will work.

i agree, i had mine grounded to the farme and now its to the block, starter likes it better.

so you run two grounds off the battery?
one to the block and one to the frame?

you can actually get one cable that has a intermediate connection so it can bolt to the frame and then the block.....correct

i think some of my infiniti cables are like that

thanx guys

Does your mallory actually have 2 sets of points? I've got a mallory centrifugal advance only distributor on mine, but it only has one set of points in it. If it's like mine, do you happen to have the part number of the distributor? I want to get a pertronix for mine, but can't figure out what it actually is. All I can find is dual point listings for cruisers. Nice looking rigs by the way. I love that rattlecan bedliner stuff, it gets addictive, you start using it everywhere.

Been thinking about your motor.

The oil issue is caused by either:
a) head gasket wrong way around
b) cam bearing wrong way round.

If its the cam bearing, you'll be getting no oil into that bearing. Given it hasnt seized yet it's unlikely to be this - but be aware if it you may seized the cam bearing eventually.

If it's the head gasket, you've got other problems also. Most head gaskets have different sized holes for the water galleries, smaller at front and larger at rear, to encourage even water flow and cooling, esp to the rear of the head. By putting the gasket backwards, the large holes will be at the front and the small at the rear. This will cause overheating of the rear of the head/block, resulting in (I would guess) excessive wear on 4,5,6, and possible gasket failure or cracking between 5 and 6. If I were you, I'd pull it and check.

I have 3 cables. One from batt to block
one from block to frame
one from bat to frame.

frame and block connection are in different places for each cable.

Means if I have an earth bolt come loose it wont cause problems, because there are essentially two circuits.

Did this after if failed on the trail due to a loose bolt on the frame earth (while still using original earth) - took ages to find problem :(

thanx andrew, great info.
we dont drive this rig that much and i will have to tear the motor down soon anyway for other reasons.
prolly this winter i'll pull it and put it in the garage.

much appreciated
