Roof top tent for 1gen 4 runners

Having crawled around on the top of mine a few times, the top clearly won't support a lot of weight in the center so you would first have to install some kind of cargo rack that took the load on the sides where the fiberglass is thicker (there are actually two layers of fiberglass on the top corners).

^This. agreed x100. if i were going to do it i would definitely put some kind of rack up there with at least 6 tie in points.

Any luck with the roof top tent? I was thinking of trying it on my 88 4Runner. It already has a pair of Yakima crossbars mounted on raingutter towers and I was thinking of adding a third near the back with fabricated suction cup towers. Trying to decide between the AutoHome Columbus and the CVT Cascadia Mt Baker.

Keep in mind that the rain gutters on the fiberglass are not structural. It will not hold up. Mine have actually started to peal off just from hitting trees. There are gutter mounts that you can get that will allow you to install load bars further back. The only ones I found that worked on a 4Runner were the Yakama. The Thule didn't line up correctly.

Even then, I'm not sure I would install a RRT. I question how strong the fiberglass shell is.

If you thought your 4Runner was slow before, wait till you put something like that on the roof and try to go down the highway...

bump. i've tossed around the idea of pulling my maggi off my 80 when i retire it and throwing it on the runner.

So, are you suggesting you want to retire your 80 in favor of a 4Runner? Isn't that, like, blasphemy in Rising Sun?

You can run steel tubing over the truck from the sliders and the rear bumper and make it a "twist off" or bolt on type and slap a RTT on it. Shouldn't be a structural problem with that setup.

don't want to retire it so much as it's got to be retired. ;)

body's rotting away, every bolt on the frame is rusted solid, motor has scoring in 5 and 6 cylinders and is burning oil. rear axle shaft has twisted splines, front control arm bolts are egged out so the entire front end shifts, which is causing brake shudder ;)

i'll get another one soon and swap all my stuff over, then strip good stuff off to do a coil/elocker setup under my pig in the far future

Another option you might consider would be a mounting system like the one the PO of my 87 installed. It was a custom job by Stout in ABQ, but involves drilling into the panels, but is really stout (pun intended).

Damn, Grant does good work.

For sure, rack is solid. The only problem I have is that the roofrack that was installed (not the one in the pics) was very heavy and caused the frame to shift side to side causing some small cracks to form at the frame's body mounts. I removed that roofrack and the cracks haven't progressed. I need to remove the whole frame and weld up the cracks, just haven't had the motivation/time to do so yet.
