Were you going to remove the differential and clean/inspect that, or just replace the pinion seal?

It looks a little damp around the companion flange area....

:meh:

I was going to. I removed all the nuts, what is there, 12 or 14 of 'em? I could NOT get that cover off. Is there a trick to that? If you think the seal may be bad, I'd best get after it.

Before painting, I was thinking I'd do a wipe down with denatured alcohol or mineral spirits or something. Is that a reasonable thing to do?

I LOVE lacquer thinner; it does a great job at removing grease, oil film and finding open wounds on your hands you did not know you had.

The Aisin body is right around 1-3/4" long.
That is the short body Aisin, I just neasured mine to make sure.
I have had the outer shortened before to take those short lockouts, I can give you exact measurement where the groove for the snap ring should be. Maybe tomorrow?
Good stuff so far, keep up the good work.

Nice picture dan...

Yep. Shamelessly stolen from you. I should have said so when I linked to it.

Kind of a slow day today.

Opened up the pumpkin head and looked inside. All looks good. I cleaned out the crud in there. Ordered a new gasket. I am gonna replace the pinion seal, so I ordered one of those, too. I never replaced a pinion seal before, so post some tips for me if you have 'em! What size socket do I need for that nut in the center of the companion flange? It is bigger than 24 mm, I know that.

I cleaned up some parts and painted them today. Backers and knuckles, as well as steering arms. I'll post pics later.

(Jumped over to my FJ62 and replaced the fuel filter. Yeesh! I made a mess! Fuel leaking all over the place! Glad I don't smoke!)

Napa has a pile of parts in for me. Calipers, hoses, etc. Next week, I'll collect it all up and try to move forward some more.

Monday I'm gonna work on that seal. Tuesday/Wednesday I'll paint. Thursday who knows?

Friday is a super special Cruiser day. I'll tell y'all about that later! I'll have pics and a story!

I love clean, grease-free, fresh-painted parts!

Who doesn't!??!?!

Looks good. Very good.

You asked about the pinon seal. There's a link in a recent thread from Poser to a Zuk page giving some hints there. But really it's pretty straightforward.

I decided to change my outer axles to the short ones so I can run my Aisin hubs. Ordered a set of short outers.

I mentioned earlier that I was going to try out the Marlin inner seals. They showed up yesterday. Got the install tool, too! :D

FJ40 disc brake conversion

Approach: Swap in a 1976 FJ40 axle up front. .... and GM calipers out back. I'm using a non-boosted Corvette master. Summit proportioning valve...

You happen to know the bore diameter of the non-boost corvette master?

I will be doing a disk brake conversion on my 66 that already has a domestic 1" bore dual circuit master cyl (ford p/u). The pedal effort is quite heavy with 4 wheel drums and I've been holding off going disk expecting it would be trouble no booster.

Looks good so far.

I'm sorry, I do not know the bore diam. I will be picking the master up tomorrow or Friday maybe, so I can measure it and post it up.

My reasons for selecting the 'vette master cylinder are simple and unscientific: It worked for some of the other guys and it looked easy. A few guys recommended I do this in some other way, but in the end I chose this one. I am hoping for the best.

BTW, I have blown my initial budget. I made a few wrong turns and I had a couple of hard luck hits. These cost me. When this is all over, if I am not too embarassed by my missteps, I may post up my costs spreadsheet. Right now, I can't!

Good write up so far! I saw the Marlin seals recently and they are beefy. Two sealing lips so leaks will be a long time coming ...

Thanks, Cooler. If I end up needing to build brake lines, I will be tapping into your knowledge. Your website is great.

At the moment, I am behind schedule.

I need to change out that danged pinion seal and I am not sure how to do that. I'm scared of that seal, so I keep putting it off. (I hate when I do this. :crybaby:) I have to go and pick up the seal at the parts store and then read up on how to change it and then JUST DO IT! If anyone has an illustrated thread for doing that job, please post up a link.

So, taskwise, next up is change the seal, then finish the axle housing clean-up, then paint the axle housing, then start the re-assembly.

I ordered new bearings and the rest of the axle seals, so I have to wait a bit until those show up.

Its easy, use a seal puller to get the old one out.. Lubricate the seal area of the new one to prevent a dry start, put plenty of thick sticky grease around the back of the seal to help stop the compression spring from flying off, I use HTB.. A thin coating of RTV around the outside will ensure it seals to the housing.. Install it.. There might be a chance your 54mm hub nut socket can be used as a driver, if not drift it in making sure its started properly.. Done.. Then ofcourse youll have to reassemble the flange, washer and nut back onto the pinion shaft.. I think 200nm is a good torque value for that nut, then stake the nut..

Hey pbg, I didn't know about these! Oh well, live and learn!

I've been a bit stalled, been busy and all, but the UPS man is still on the job. He brought me Poser brackets and rotors today.
