Today was perfect garage time. Rather warm temps with drizzle. Lets back up to Yesterdays activities. I cleaned the otherwise pretty clean gas tank using a mixer of CLR and 4 gallons of vinegar. Worked well…

This morning my intention was to assemble the fuel tank unit. With new pump and level sensor. All went as expected until I realized that the J30R10 submersible fuel hose I bought was 1/4” when what’s required is 5/16”. Do the math if mm matters. Amazon is not my go to but through them I can have a foot of 5/16 here tomorrow.

So I moved on to the core support support and the radiator. Surprisingly, the OEM radiator arrived displaying 50% unsecured foam rubber. Off to town I went.. coming home with Gorilla brand contact adhesive meant I would win! And I did win!

Oh yeah, I have three fan shrouds, three are cracked. Check yours. View attachment 4046580View attachment 4046584View attachment 4046583View attachment 4046585View attachment 4046582

Did you say I should buy a new fan shroud? And where have you been anyway??? The shroud that was cracked was kept from the 93. The 96 shroud passed my flex test so it will continue in service.

Spun the pinions and slathered grease on the knuckle balls. Winterization.

I have never seen clear coat peel like this. Time to bust out proof I went to China and bought a five inch orbital sander for $54.95.

That’s what I thought. This truck spent its life in Bend Oregon. It was under cold and hot heat. Left in the certain sun it…. Did what it did.

I lived in Bend for 12 yrs and been over here in Eastern Oregon for 15 and my green 80 hood looked similar. It took me 2 tries but I fixed mine with flat black bed liner. To reduce or eliminate glare. Hey, the military does it to their fighter jets and other planes and choppers - it works for me - now I can't use the excuse "The sun was in my eyes!" 1st try I didn't scuff it up or sand it. I just de-greased and painted it, and it peeled bad. Lasted about 3 yrs. 2nd time I took the orbital sander to it before painting and seems to have worked. It's been several years (more than 3) and it still looks fine.YMMV

It looks industrial. My plan was to paint it “hot rod” satin black along with the rest of the body. The green is so dark I think the door jams will go nearly unnoticed. Spraymax 2k.

Yeah, I agree. In some light, it’s mistaken for black. I was on a run several years ago with my ROF group, (“retired old farts”) and the leader was thinking it was black. This was down in Arizona, we were running KOFA, and he kept jokingly on the radio, referring to my black Land Cruiser, that I was scaring up the coyotes! For some reason we were seeing a lot. We got back in camp and I showed him and the rest of the group that it was green. Maybe it was just our old eyes.;) I think that one of the reasons that the paint on the hood is one of the first to go is the heat that our hot blooded 1FZ engines produces. It would be a good idea to make sure that the paint on the hood will withstand “high heat“.
