Thanks all for the suggestions, links, and videos. I was away all weekend for the LandCruiser Round-Up, but now that I'm home again I will dig back into the tailgate.

Post #82 in this thread shows the safety switch bypassed on the terminal strip. It's the red wire connected to ground. FWIW you can still buy that OEM terminal strip. It's not very expensive IIRC.
The safety switch just keeps you (or someone) from rolling up the window when the tailgate is open.

Interesting. I thought that was just the mechanical mechanism.
You're right. 
I was thinking of the lever that has to be pushed down with the window in order for the handle work. I got my wires crossed. 
The safety switch has nothing to do with that part.
